  • Just happened to see this at lunch. Can't wait to hear this tonight! Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers were always on the radio in my home growing up. I love this song. I always tear up a bit. Thank you!

What do I have, said the fine old woman
What do I have, this proud old woman did say
I have four green fields, each one was a jewel
But strangers came and tried to take them from me
I have fine strong sons, who fought to save my jewels
They fought and they died, and that was my grief said she

Long time ago, said the fine old woman
Long time ago, this proud old woman did say
There was war and death, plundering and pillage
My children starved, by mountain, valley and sea
And their wailing cries, they shook the very heavens
My four green fields ran red with their blood, said she

What have I now, said the fine old woman
What have I now, this proud old woman did say
I have four green fields, one of them's in bondage
In stranger's hands, that tried to take it from me
But my sons had sons, as brave as were their fathers
My fourth green field will bloom once again said she

  • Great new and original take on what many thought to be an old Irish traditional standard. It was actually written in 1967! I instantly recognized the melody at 1:11 because I know the words. If you don’t mind, I would like to post Tommy and the Clancy Brothers performing the original. It made me cry, just a little. Brought back sweet memories. Very nicely done, Tony.

  • Cheers @Paulieworld . I had a far more traditional version on the back burner for months but it always sounded like a poor imitation of the original so I morphed it into the the drone / Sax / echoey version yesterday and it seemed to work. It’s a great tune so can stand the abuse 😊

    Haunting.

  • Haunting indeed...full of space yet nothing more is needed in this version, I think.

It definitely works! I like it very much. No abuse done.

  • Like the harmonies, good sax sound!

  • You’re at the top of your Geogame, Tony.

  • Using Teraverse as a drone to solo over: now I have to try that too. I think I have to copy the whole idea; great stuff!

  • @Stochastically … Copy away… btw where’s my picture 😢

  • Now THAT’S what I call soul music.

    Stately and sublime, @GeoTony.

  • Beautiful.
    Haunting.
I have to agree, you are at the top of your game, @GeoTony !
    Your creativity is so appreciated!
    With love and respect,
    Rene
