Model 15, Factory and a Krell: The Nine Billion Names Of God

“It is really quite simple. We have been compiling a list which shall contain all the possible names of God.” - Arthur C. Clarke

Inspired by threads here reminding me what a great synth Factory is, and @LinearLineman ’s recent Model 15 adventures, I threw an excellent miRack Krell patch from patchstorage into the mix and, in a break from tradition, actually, gasp, ‘played’ the Model 15s inspiring Animoog keyboard live to produce this brief homage to the usually Uber-rationalist SciFi author Arthur C. Clarke’s most moving, anti-rationalist short story, which had a big impact on my own writing aspirations as a callow kid almost a half century ago.

Read the really very short short story here:

https://urbigenous.net/library/nine_billion_names_of_god.html

It’s last-line punchline will stay with you a long time…

Factory on atmospherics, miRack Krell patch on Krelling, and Model 15 on lead. No other instruments used. Recorded in AUM as three loops and mixed live into AudioShare. Usual reverbs applied. Enjoy!

Comments

  • Very epic, I like the almost bagpipe sounds.

  • Excellent! Love that patch on Model 15. Is it one you made?

  • Lovely, epic yet dreamy atmosphere. Really nice mix of sounds.

  • Very nice indeed. You say you don't have any musical ability but your output completely contradicts that. You're going to have to face it. You're a musician and a damn good one at that.

  • This is your Barp,,,,,,,please use me !

    another wonderful piece, thank you for sharing

  • Wow. Beautiful. Unexpected.

  • Nicely done. You are nailing it.

  • One of my favorite short stories by ACC. I can hear the stars fading out. I did something called Astral Plains Of Oumuamua based on Rendezvous With Rama. I miss your comments.

  • Dramatic, dreamy, and very cinematic.
    I am simply enjoying the ride I am in.
    Very nice!

  • Definitely very different from what we are used to hearing from you. Would like to hear more in this vein.

  • Loving this @Svetlovska, fits the story perfectly - thanks for sharing. (Coincidentally, I recently got this book for my son.)

    Hi all, thanks for your kind attention and comments.

    @sevenape : Gee, thanks. Now I can’t unhear that. Bagpipes, already! :)

    @HotStrange : no, too good for me. It was a preset from one of the add on packs. I went back to check for you which one, and realised I’d updated the AUM session so now all I have is the resultant loops, I can’t remember which preset it was, or even which pack it came from. Doh! I really should document my processes better, save my unmixed stems and so on…

    @cyberheater : blushing now :) @Syn: very funny! :) Don’t worry, the BARP is getting plenty of use, alongside the Lyra, just not much of it is ready for prime time yet. You’ll be the first to know when that changes… :)

    @LinearLineman : unexpected because… in tune? ;)

    @ReneAsologuitar : thank you!

    @michael_m : appreciate the thought, but I do have my reputation to think of! I do try, very, very hard, to ensure that no gleam of light or hope ever breaks through the lowering gloom of my territory, but sometimes, in spite of myself, it does. Rest assured, I shall endeavour to snuff out these aberrations wherever they occur. I apologise for the current unpardonable lapse! ;)

    @pbelgium : I hope your son finds the stories as mind expanding as I did all those years ago.

    @Ben , @ReneAsologuitar , @AlterEgo_UK : thank you, thank you all: your attention, your feedback, is all the drug I crave to keep plodding on…

  • Transported me to another universe. Very good, and made me question my prejudices and opinions on ambient music. Thank you.

  • Lovely stuff… I’m sure on the quiet your having music lessons 😊

  • That title sounded so familiar to me. Thanks for posting the link to the Arthur C. Clarke short story.

  • This one works for me. Makes me want to dig out those apps. My dad used to play cards with Clarke when we lived in Ceylon back in the early 60s.

    Whoa. That’s a good conversation starter.

    My Clarke anecdotes end there though. I was too small to remember him, and dad died in 2008.
