Cydonia (Korg 01/W)

edited April 2023 in Creations

There appears to be a few fans of the amazing Korg 01/W, so I thought I would post a few more from those 1999 sessions. Keep in mind that these tracks are over twenty years old, when digital audio was just becoming available to amateurs. I remastered them with Cubasis Channel Strip, Studio EQ, FabFilter Pro Q 3, and MagicDeathEye. I think they cleaned up nicely.

The MIDI recording software was Texture, written by Roger Powell, keyboard player for Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. The audio software was Turtle Beach Quad. It only had 4 tracks, but it was more than enough for us at the time. The computer was a Windows PC that cobbled together from parts that I got on the cheap.

This one was written by my friend and band mate, Curt Mizener. It also features the incomparable Tony Iovino on guitar. Curt gave me his MIDI file and I ran it thru the 01/W, and this is what came out.

Cydonia - The face on Mars. I accidentally cut off the first few milliseconds of the intro. CD recorders were very expensive at the time, so I took the tracks to a professional studio and recorded them to DAT. I didn’t discover my mistake until I got home. My bad!

I posted these next few tracks last year, so please excuse the bump, but I think they demonstrate the capabilities of the incredible 01/W.

Sarasvati - This was written by Tony Iovino, so it’s what you might expect. Full shred, balls to the wall. As Briscoe Darling would have said… Hang on tight… ah one… ah two…

Rise And Shine - Featuring a more laid back Tony Iovino.

Iceland - This is pure 01/W. One take, no overdubs. My favorite part comes in at 4:07.

  • I loved the 01W, had one, miss it. That was a fabulous machine. I still was using a falcon and cubase at the time.
Thanks for these tracks. Now I feel hyper nostalgic.

I am tempted to get it out and play it after more than a decade. I’m glad you enjoyed the tracks. We called the project ‘A Three Hour Tour’. It ended up being nothing we like first planned, sort of like Gilligan’s Island. Have a great day!

Thanks for posting (and reposting) these.
    I enjoyed Iceland most.

I vote getting the 01w out and having a play.

My Korg x3 (poor man's 01w) is plugged in. Not even hooked up to a DAW, just there for the joy of playing it.

  • Loved my Korg O1w/fd :) lovely sounds. I still wasn’t able to make many decent tunes as that time I searching for a DAW that fitted the way my mind worked. Had to wait 25 years for GarageBand IOS :)

In the end just before 1998 I sold it to Rick Wakeman’s son Oliver, he used it in his gigs and studio for a fair number of years after.

  • Great compositions @Paulieworld! Love them!

  • These are awesome! Hard to choose a favorite, I like them all. I would have bought an album of these in the 90’s for sure. You took the 01/w to the max.

Hi rollin. Unfortunately, I would have to rig up some sort of adapter. I'm glad you liked Iceland. I have always been happy with that one. I think it's the one that got me thinking I could actually compose music. Thank you!

  • 1991? No way!
I can't be that long ago.
    It just seems like yesterday.
    32 voices... used 'em all.

Rick Wakeman! He was always a favorite of mine. I played The Six Wives of Henry VIII until you hear side B from side A.

Hi Dav. Thanks for listening. Glad you liked them. I understand you are busy, but I will be posting something this weekend that I left some space for a horn part. It will be available on Bandcamp if are ever interested. I think it stands on it's own, but a little Botti-style horn would make it so much better. If you ever decide to, just surprise me! Thanks for listening.

  • Boy you guys were good… hints of Brand X, Daryl Steurmer, Gary Boyle (english guitarist), JL Ponty.
    Fantastic stuff Paul 🙏
Did you have any commercial success or were you too good for that 😊

Unfortunately no commercial success. Probably for the best. That group was a ticking time bomb. It wasn't actually a group, just a few of us writing and recording. Tony Iovino just disappeared one day and I haven't heard from him in over twenty years. I did have some success with a Fleetwood Mac tribute named Mirage. That is, we actually made some money opening for famous old rock acts touring the Midwest summer festival circuit. It was fun while it lasted. I miss playing in a band, but I'm having a good time with my iPad and this forum.

Truly enjoyable track, and really love the magic of Tony's guitar.
I am so glad I heard this recording.
    Very inspiring!!!

  • Lol, just rewatching Tim Robbins in Mission To Mars. Cydonia, indeed.

The latest hi-res images were quite a disappointment. I still believe there is something out there. Astronomers are discovering exoplanets almost daily. My beliefs are bolstered by the fact that I saw five UFOs late one evening back in the mid 70s. There was a group of four, and one by itself. They were bright amber colored lights shining down, and they didn't move. I finally just went to bed. Apparently, I was not alone. I reported them to the police the next day. They didn't seem surprised, and had the phone number for the Civil Aeronautics Board immediately available. I called them and they took my information, thanked me and hung up. My friend, a baker, was up early that morning and he saw an orange pencil-shaped object just hanging there in the sky. There were no news reports about it. I've never seen anything like it since then.

It's an (undocumented) fact that the reason Korg phased out the 01/W was its unforeseen capacity for attracting alien life.

  • @purpan2 Ah... that would explain all the "other stuff".
