Is there a plug-in that will make mixes sound like they went through an analog SSL desk?
You know: glued together in a warm space.

Yup and of course, Brainworx SSL console emulation plugins on desktop, on sale right now:

You can do it with impulse responses. PastToFutureReverbs has 2 SSL IR’s.

Fabfilter Saturn 2 is quite cool. A swiss army knife of compression, saturation, eq etc.
Short answer: No
Long answer: nooooooooo
Answer from anyone who has never used an SSL console: yes, with plugins you will get the same result
I've never used an SSL console, so I wouldn't know. But I like MagicDeathEyeStereo for that "glued together in a warm space" compression on my master tracks. That, and as @A_Fox said, Fabfilter Saturn 2 for great multiband saturation that emulates various types of saturation (from tubes to tape and other such things).![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
FACT ! I was going to type something very similar, well played !
Weird Saturn setup fof me.
Send kick across ipads as to sidechain, whilst still in production of song ( a negative of dual ipads )
Obviously signal needs matching gain.
Instead use Saturn gain on original ipad and need the sends as gains, depending on saturn amount.
The second ipad can just be a weaker sidechain signal or extra un-saturn kick.
Will have to see if its ideal.
Not even sure I need saturn on a send though.
I think this is how it works.
Maybe Id notice a difference if Drambo audio does go from left to right.
and kick were last track going out via usb before being bussed out.
but I think saturn is a permanent fx.
Plugins are probably better anyhow, especially if you spill your cup of tea a lot.
Well, some Apple devices cost a lot. Don’t want to risk spilling tea on them either..
What at the actual F***** are you taking about?
That maybe some $x.00 piece of software could make your music suddenly sound like a classic recording in a top tier environment, with brilliant performers playing the best instruments available, filtered through real talent and inspiration?
No.
Let me repeat, no.
For warm space... turn on a heater. Glue?... lots of options, try honey.
Do you know what " they went through an analog SSL desk?" actually means ? ( I do ... and it wasn't due to my ability, to be sure).
And at the risk of repeating myself ...no, no...no ...
Maybe, just believe in what you can do... make your music the way it sounds best to you... maybe one day they'll be asking if there's a plug in that sounds like " an iPad, with a built in mic and "X" synthesizer "..."
Can anyone even tell if a mix has gone though an analog SSL desk just by listening to it?
And "glued together in a warm space" sounds like marketing hype from a plug-in seller.
Funny, it’s a thread about SSL like sounding stuff and no mention of this site:
https://www.solidstatelogic.com/
I like the channel strip - really nice sounding EQ and all the good stuff built in. Does it sound like a desk? Well, no it doesn’t, but the quality of the offering is there.
First, SSL analog mixers are famous for for the quality of their preamps, also the circuits used in those desks (EQ and comps) are of the highest quality and therefore difficult to clone by an algorithm. Then, there is the buss section where everything is summed and the magic happens. Also, don't forget that in front of every SSL console there is always a sound engineer at the peak of his career: he knows very well what he is doing...
Seen from this perspective, thinking of being able to recreate this whole path just by throwing an insert plugin on the master seems a bit unrealistic to me, I’m afraid it won’t happen. Just think that when you plug the mic in your mickey mouse audio interface, the signal will have already been degraded at the source.
Despite all the devs marketing, you can't get SSL analog sound using an iPad, but that doesn't mean you can't have decent mixes with tablet and plugins
Funny you should mention that site. Some of their marketing quotes are:
"“The minute you put these BiG SiXes in the circuit things get glued together and sound great,”"
"Sub-bass dynamics can be controlled and 'glued' to the original source material using the built-in SSL Compressor module."
"Apple Silicon M1/ARM native support; THE legendary glue & punch maker; Glues tracks and subgroups together;"
"“When you're mixing, everything is musically glued together. If you've got good sources, even if you don't do anything with EQ or dynamics"
"A lot of mixes we've been hearing from rock gigs mixed in Atmos haven't glued together particularly well, but being able to use the SSL..."
"the way in before it hits my DAW — it just glues everything together so nicely."
"Plus, I can apply the G-Series compression to the entire mix, which really glues everything together sonically.”."
""We've compared it to other songs live and the thing that stands out the most is that it sounds like one package - one glued-together"
"The Fusion really glues the mix together."
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! i just want something simple to give the impression of an SSL mix- I don't think the real thing can be fully digitally modelled yet-
As for an example, here is the home studio mix of Saved by Doubting Thomas, sans vocal samples
(The link works just copy paste and rejoin https:// vimeo.com /665896525/1998b0eca7")
And here is the SSL mixed and mastered version:
These pics take me back to my days at uni. I cut my teeth learning to mix on an analogue desk. It was fun, like being in the cockpit of a jet, but creating Experimental music that sounded like flying a jet rather than flying a jet. 😂
No one should get discouraged thinking "without an SSL desk I will never be able to express my true artistic value". Obviously that's not true: recording studios with that kind of stellar SSL mixers are dedicated to major productions where any even minimal improvement in sound is useful to fight the eternal battle to sound better than the other competitors. Today, with a laptop/ iPad and a decent audio interface, you can go a long way for sure
@recycle I wouldn’t say you need any of this stuff to make a great sounding piece of music. Back in the day a Mackie 1604 and some tape or ADATs could get you there. I agree that the iPad could get you there too. The plugins available now just seem to be getting better and better.
@jwmmakerofmusic the tactile element of reaching for knobs on the fly is really the only things I miss using computer tech. I saw that pic of the SSL setup when it was released and just said to myself “OK, that’s going in the studio”. I’ve trialed the channel strip and it sounds great. Shame they don’t do iPad yet, but you never know what’s around the corner.
@recycle i worked on SSL desk for YEARS. 4000, 9000, even a 96 channel Duality. Day in and day out, and while yes, there is nothing like it, plugins nowadays, paired with a high quality interface / converter, can come very close, maybe a 5 -10% difference in sound quality. The one thing i miss the most, is having actual knobs and faders. Nothing like quickly just twisting some knobs and setting some faders.
I liked the track and the finished mix. Unfortunately couldn’t get the Vimeo link to work.
There are a lot of really good plugins available on the iPad (FabFilter, Toneboosters, DDMF and the list goes on…) and with a reasonable DAW host I reckon you could get there. It’s not just about the board it goes through. Personally, I think it’s more the quality of the source material before it goes through the processing that will make the most difference to the sound. After that it’s balancing and treatment to taste.
@ltf3 I understand what you are trying to say here but please try and be a bit more helpful in your reply, the OP is asking for help and it’s not very helpful to be told that you don’t know what your talking about.
Doug
Having watched cEvin’s recent streams about the Doubting Thomas period I’m wondering if that one was mixed (by cEvin, not a pro mixer) on the MCI @ Vancouver studios rather than the SSL @ Mushroom Studios. If you aren’t on the Patreon I can try to fact check myself
The demos were definitely done on a very limited rig by current standards.
Exactly, hopefully their channel strip makes it to the iPad, but I got my favourite gluing methods using what plugins I already use for mastering. 😉 Namely the aforementioned MagicDeathEyeStereo. I usually find the loudest part of a mix, adjust the volume until it peaks at around -12dB or so, then crank up the input, crank down the output, and adjust the threshold until it reduces to between -2dB and -3dB. I also flick the highpass switch to 20Hz on MDES' little EQ section to clean up inaudible frequencies on the low end.
I just miss that tactile feeling of the knobs, sliders, and switches, and the feeling of being in the centre of a cockpit, letting my imagination take flight. 😌 The closest I've ever come to that "cockpit in a studio" feeling/vibe on the iPad (despite not having tactile knobs) is live producing Ambient in AUM. It's hard to describe "why".
Gadget also gives me that "in the studio" vibe. It's one reason I'm obsessed with it.
Dang I went rather offtopic, lol. If SSL releases their channel strip to iPad, and it's $50 or less, I'd probably jump on it to play around with it. Then again, would I really need it? 🤔 MDES does have a small EQ section like channel strips tend to have and in theory can work like a channel strip compressor.
Full Puppy-geek x recording-nerd check back… The demo was recorded through a Boss mixer (guessing a BX) to cassette as a rough mix for reference and to play to mates. The studio recording used a Sony MCI console. SSL in the sleeve notes relates to a Screensound DAW used for editing i.e. no SSL console involved.
