SSL 12 vs Motu M6 vs UA VOLT 476p

I’m in the market for a new audio interface and I’ve narrowed my choices to these 3. Planning to use it with my Mac and iPad. Anyone using any of these and have an opinion? I’m leaning towards the SSL but haven’t seen or found much information on how it is on IOS. While it is not officially supported on iOS, they do say it is class compliant and works. Anyone confirm?
It would be great to hear any pros and cons for anyone of these devices as they are all appealing and within my budget.

    I have the SSL2 and can confirm it works without any issues on iOS.

    All 3 of those interfaces are going to be very good, I went for the SSL as it has the best preamps for my use (SM7B dynamic mic).

  • Cheers @richardyot ….I’ve read some things about the 2. I think there’s a difference with the 12 and the software utility it uses. That software doesn’t work on the iPad so I’m keen to know if you can setup the 12 on the computer and then it’ll retain those settings when using on iOS.

    Sorry I can't help with that, I have no experience with the 12.

  • I use a UA Volt 276 with my iPad Pro. I chose it over a comparable SSL model, which I found slightly noisier. No issues and the interface can be powered by the iPad. Not sure if the model you’re looking at can.

    M6 All day…. Lowest latency, 4mic/line/inst inputs + an additional stereo line input, individual phantom power, meters…

  • Avoid the Presonus Audiobox USB96 if you are gonna record line-level instruments - its inputs are MIC-level and guitar-level only, so if you plugin in your synth or any other line-level device, it will go into the red too much. The input impedance is way off and not suitable with line-level instruments. They just don't sound right.

    The PreSonus AudioBox iTwo has inputs which can be line-level, in addition to MIC and guitar level.

  • The Arturia MiniFuse 4 looks nice. Have you considered it ?

    This, IMO. I’ve had a MOTU M4 since it was first released. It replaced a more costly Focusrite Clarett after multiple comparisons and bested the Audient id4 and Evo 4, which I had for awhile. The M series offers super low latency, excellent preamps (with enough clean gain to handle low output ribbon and dynamic mics), exceptional metering (better than any I’ve seen), and possibly the loudest, cleanest headphone amp available on any interface.

    FWIW, if your interface has good, clean preamps, which most of them do these days, choosing between microphones will make a far greater difference than the so-called boutique or legacy preamps some brands promote in their marketing.

    On the M4, there’s a button on each channel to select live or software (DAW) monitoring. Everything else is controlled within the DAW without relying on a separate mixer app. I’m not sure how you’re thinking of using it, but this arrangement has always worked well for me. And because the latency is so low, I always monitor through the DAW so I can add compression or effects while recording. There seem to be some additional hardware settings on the M6 but no dedicated software mixer, AFAIK.

  • the SSL is very good for guitar, bass recordings; UAD Volt scores with the possibility of "vintage" and "76 compressor" to bring in a coloring, and is a good compromise, whether for vocals (better than SSL with 4K switched on) or guitar, bass etc.. .compared to the most expensive, but also clearly "best" Neve 88 M-which was also an important criterion for me-the inserts of the Neve, since I often and gladly work with analog outgear (as can not be overlooked in the picture ;-)

    Thank you Schmotown, that is very helpful. I've got a MOTU Audio Express (not USB-class-compliant) and it has the software mixer on Windows/Mac (Cuemix FX), so I would miss it on the M6.

    If I want to start working quickly, without a DAW, I can unmute the input in the software mixer.
    Plus I like the 'almost no latency' direct monitoring, especially when playing drums.

  • Another thing about the M6 is it works in standalone mode as a 6x4 mixer… great if you want to expand down the road or work in the analog realm. I do wish it had another set of outputs…but for the price it’s a lot of bang for the buck…
