Video Demo: Spring Sound ($3 Physical Modeling Synth for iOS & M1 Mac!) into several Gauss, Magic Pitch, etc)

All sounds come only from SpringSound in this demo, but some FX apps have also been used. Workflow, links etc in the pinned YouTube comment.

SpringSound is an excellent physical modeling synth and only costs $3. It is IAA, and some users have found it a bit buggy recently, but the dev is still actively maintaining it - for the price, it’s worth a punt. The developer now works for Haken and Expressive-E, so that says something about his physical modeling chops.

The vid doesn’t show SpringSound much, as it is more a real time performance using several instances of SpringSound recorded into Gauss - demos by the dev etc are linked to in the pinned comment and I might get round to a walkthrough soon.

  • Just noticed btw that you can use Stage Manager to listen to the youtube app in the background while browsing other apps, sweeeet!

Another cool thing with background audio is (I believe) you can sample directly into Dawnbeat that way.

Ah! I still need to properly explore dawnbeat.

Yes, no one has done a walkthrough yet, mind you. I'm tempted but it's pretty complex!

  • Interesting that it’s mac compatible too, probably only useful with a decent controller…

  • don't forget
that it is also an FX!:)
you can excite its "springs" with an external noise/field rec/etc

That too! I actually had it loaded in an fx slot here with drums loaded in the instrument slot, though I wasn't actually using them as an exciter in the audio I generated here. > @Krupa said:

I mean it is designed for use with mpe controllers, particularly the Continuum, but you can map a few knobs to a few ccs to control those y and x axis parameters. And velocity is also set up to map to that so this can be very expressive even without a fancy controller. Like I said, I just used Rozeta Particles as a midi input here and got some great results (I liked them anyway!)

It’s excellent. Especially with AU effects hosting now.

Nice enough with a little lightpad, gently expressive…

The nice thing about it is that the way the engine is mapped, you get a lot of expression just with playing velocity notes on, and lots of parameters are able to be modulated in-app in terms of how they respond to that. It also has potentials for all sorts of craziness outside that, like sliding your ipad to one side or the other to control ball movement, adding in totally random balls, adjusting how velocity triggers various modulation settings. A pure gem in my book. Great with an mpe device but also without. For 3 bucks, it's a keeper!

Thanks! Been busting my balls trying to properly understand the intricacies... Not easy when so many factors are at play, but a proper tutorial might come out at some point. If I can properly get my head around the interactions of all the different springs, their masses, frictions, various routing possibilities etc 😂
