Kooky synth percussion test with InTheory + Mersenne

Testing out InTheory with midi percussion pads:

The right side is set to advance scale, the left decrements the scale. From bottom to top 1,3,5,7 steps. Middle is +/- 0. REALLY want to have the return o root mapped to the left middle so it's possible to gracefully return after an insane run up or down...

Love to hear thoughts or ideas on how to progress with this idea.

Obvious inspirations are guys like:

  • Excellent idea ( and playing) ! I can see how you'd get immersed in that. I think @cem_olcay should see this; it's such a great use of his app. Also Mersenne was a good choice for the synth. [ I've found I can get interesting changes of timbre by using LFOs to modify some settings in Mersenne while I'm playing. ]

  • The “In Theory” layout is perfect for this application. I have a 4 pad KAT Pad MIDI controller and now I can see that I need more targets… Good job finding interesting sequences.

  • Extremely cool! And it still takes talent to have good rhythm! +1 definitely for Cem adding the back to root function, that would be useful.

  • Love it!

  • Crazy chops; tnx very much. Would love to hear you blowing that thing with a beat next.

Always liked Roy Ayers. Vibraphone all over this jazz-pop single he cut in the 80s:

Yea, I want add a rhythm to it, and I've also just discovered the pretty incredible PianoMotifs app (holy cow that thing need more attention!) so I want to work with that, plus the new mozaic chord constrain that @wim developed for me, to try to set these random note blasts into a more musical context.

But I'm also trying not to go nuts like the last time I worked on something like this on my PC in Reaper... I ended up with this:

And it was basically so complex I could never really use it. It was like 80% setup and 20% playing.

It was kinda fun for a while. Then I swore I'd stick more to the ipad as it's a much smaller box of crayons and is more constraining. ;)

Now it's like counting cards... :) have to keep track of how many R's and L' played in double strokes, triple strokes, paradiddles, etc.

But it is a cool way to think about melody in terms of +/- of patterns. I'd bet there's prob. some German composer that got a phd on some idea like that. (and then went on to make a mean cappuccino at Starbucks! :) )

  • Hey @MonkeyDrummer - have you tried Hypno Sequence yet?

No, missed that one. A quick read makes it sound interesting! Very much like the Piz VST MidiSteps it seems.

Damnit @wim! I already have two huge apps to learn in my backlog! stop distracting me with.... SQUIRREL!!!!

  • Fascinating sounds and beautiful playing. Thanks for posting 🙏
