Expressive iOS controller?

Anyone know if there is such a thing as an app that would allow me to play my synths expressively? Like a virtual Roli keyboard? An app I could use in AUM in combination with my synths? Would love that, tried searching the store but couldn't see much.

    Here’s one: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kb-1-keyboard-suite/id1437919435

I feel like there’s another one that was just released but I can’t remember what it’s called. Maybe someone else will chime in about it.

Edit: also, I believe there’s an IAP for Animoog Z that allows you to use its keyboard to control other apps.

  • I guess you mean this one:

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/beat-pads/id1633882803

I've got both, kb1 is also an auv3, so in case that's important to you, you could use that, or geoshred control, which at least at the moment is free.

I personally liked beat pads the most, with kb1 I tend to get stuck notes, YMMV.

  • Here's the link for geoshred:

    https://apps.apple.com/de/app/geoshred-control/id1336247116

Nice about geoshred is, that you can have precise pitchbend (moving your finger from one note to another and actually ending on the note your finger is on) given that the synth and geoshred share the same pitchbend range.

Why I liked beat pads the most is, you can set for example note pressure and cc74 on the X and y axis.

Velocity kbd is worth a look in my opinion.

Fwiw. I don’t experience stick notes with kb-1

TC-Data is incredible, beautiful, and great fun. You should definitely take a look at it, but I use GeoShred or Velocity kb much more often.

Search for David English's posts in this forum. He has made a lot of nice tracks using TC-Data.

  • It’s not AU but Xequence Keys is great. Geoshred as well. Haven’t tried the others but Velocity Keyboard and Beat Pads are the ones I’m looking at.

  • ThumbJam as a MIDI controller is also very expressive and configurable (just mute the audio).

Xequence Keys is AU! In fact the full name is Xequence AU Keys lol. It's not mpe, but yes, lots of expressive possibilities with the cc sliders and a gorgeous UI - my personal favourite non-mpe keyboard app

I don’t get too many controlling synths on the device, but I’ve given up on it for playing my Mavis using an SQ-1 as a MIDI-CV converter. More stuck notes than you could shake a stick at. After about an hour of troubleshooting settings etc I just reverted to AUM’s keyboard, which works perfectly.

I haven’t tried Xequence Keys - it sounds promising. Though it’s not often I need to use a controller.

Omg you’re right 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m so used to clarifying that Xequence 2 isn’t AU that I guess I did that out of habit 😂
