Some Korg 01/W grooves from the 90's.
@Paulieworld shared some of his great 1990's tracks using a Korg 01/W and a 4-track, beefed up fresh using todays iPad audio tools. That inspired me to do the same since I had the same setup in the 90's, a Korg 01/W and a 4-track. It's fun to look back once and a while.
Here's one I started on but didn't finish (and obviously still trying to define a melody). Not exactly sure if the melody is mine or I'm copying one I'd heard. I was a student back then, still getting my feet wet composing/recording. I remember taking this track to school and one of my music teachers scolded me for wasting time on music that didn't matter. "Practice your recital pieces!' he said.
This track was done using a Korg 01/w and a trumpet. I used Brusfri to get rid of tape hiss, TB compressor, TB EQ, MixBox, Beatformer to punch it up. Already had too much reverb in it, but I couldn't resist adding a touch more, lol.
Comments
I can't wait to hear this tonight when I get home.
No such thing as music that "doesn't matter".
If it moves you, it's good.
You are always a student of music.
Excellent restoration and a solid mix
The style variations are refreshing in retrospective
Just got home and listened first thing. I love everything about it, except… it could be longer! I was really digging it. It reminded me of later Miles with a bit of Freddie Hubbard (Super Blue). The break at 1:53 made go “Yeah man!”. Sweet, sparse, right and tight.
Not knowing what the original sounded like, I can only compare with my stuff (which needed some major cleanup). This is really clean and nice. All instruments in balance. Excellent work. I salute you!
I’m gonna listen a few more times before dinner.
Thanks @Paulieworld and @Telefunky! Yeah, I definitely was influenced by Miles back then. I got to hear him in concert about a year before he died, was shocked at what I heard, totally blew me away.
The original recording of this was very dull and dirty. The tools we have on iPad today are so great! Surprised how clean it came out.
I love it (both musically and the production).
Got around the length problem by playing it three times in a row!
Hope to hear more of your 01W material.
Nice! Sounds great, and I especially love the trumpet!
i know exactly what you mean about the melody, it happens to me all the time where I think I’ve discovered something new and original, only to find out I’ve been imitating something that I’ve heard.
Exceptional! Would have made a great theme song for the movie “Confess, Fletch” starring John Hamm.
Thanks, @rollin, @Edward_Alexander and @NeuM! I found a couple more like this on the same tapes that I’ve started cleaning up, they must have been done about the same week. I’ll post them.
Man, I never would have dreamed 30 years ago I’d be sharing these bedroom recordings today with folks around the world like this. What an incredible age we live in.
Great track and nice job cleaning up. Looking forward to hearing more.
This recording is superb!
I am also digging the trumpet, lovely sound, very jazzy!!!
Love this!
Looking forward to them, I'll keep an eye on this thread.
+1 what Rene said 🙏
Thanks, @ReneAsologuitar, @pbelgium, @rollin, @GeoTony.
I'm sorry I've neglected adding more here. Some of you know I've been care-taking my dad who has been ill. Well, he went on to be with the Lord 3 weeks ago and I've been dealing with all that's involved with that, trying to adjust.
Well here's one more I found on the same tapes as the first posted groove. I think I recorded this soon after I listened to Miles 'Amandla' album, because I tried to imitate a track on that. I called this "Miles' Nightmare". This took a lot of work cleaning up. I think I lost control on the drums at the end, lol.
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. My dad passed a few years ago. I take comfort in that his three kids were at his bedside. He was an engineer and a meticulous planner, and he anticipated everything, so there was no confusion about anything. It helped that my little sister grew up to be an attorney!
Now to the music… I had a bit of trouble getting it to play. I finally opened it in Twisted Wave and it played perfectly. I definitely heard later Miles in this. Mostly TuTu. Probably one of my favorites next to Bitches Brew. I enjoyed this very much! You did a fantastic job of remastering this. It’s as clean as a whistle. Right and tight. My only complaint is that I would have liked it to be longer. I really like this stuff. I have several workups that would benefit from your style. Maybe one day we can hook up.
Thanks @Paulieworld. Hmm, I used lame encoder under Windows 7 to make the MP3 file for this one. I’ll try another encoder next time. Thanks for listening!
MP3 open up and worked fine for me on iPad…
Great piece of music, loved the little references to other tunes , excellent playing (not sure what on 🤨)
I haven't forgotten about this thread, just have been real busy. I cleaned up another groove from my 1990's Korg 01W days. Really pleased how well the iPad tools cleaned it up. I remember recording this song during a summer break. I really got into keyboard playing that summer. All sounds are from the KORG 01/W except my trumpet (and my attempted vocals, lol)
Used a slew of AU effects on this, MixBox, many of the TB effects, Brusfri to name a few.
Super cool! Great composition, arrangement, and mixing. A great piece of music transcends the medium. I can still enjoy my parent’s old Duke Ellington records in spite of the scratches. Hope to hear more from you!
01/W
Sounds good to me. Great feel, lovely muted trumpet. Top job !
Thanks for listening, @Paulieworld and @GeoTony!
I’m new to this thread and just downloaded and listened to all three tracks.
There’s a whole tradition of LA Studio groups that make music in this vein:
The Crusaders with Joe Sample and Larry Carlton
Foreplay with Bob James and Lee Ritenaur
and the Trumpet led film scores of Mark Islam and Terrence Ballard
I love this music for its harmonic and rhythmic grooves. Really enjoyed your contributions to this genre of what is
marketed as smooth jazz but it’s really a notch above the generic smooth jazz because the writing is so much better
than the Kenny G stuff that typifies smooth jazz. But it doesn’t;t get it’s own label… for me it’s just music made by good musicians. Maybe Good Smooth Jazz. It’s music that’s generally more accessible than any other jazz suburb. Maybe it’s
Yacht Jazz… for the sophisticated palette.
Hey thanks, @McD. Yes I know some of those musician name and their music. Smooth jazz always left me flat, so I also preferred the more interesting stuff like those guys.
I probably should add this track to this thread, as it come from the same time as the others posted. I cleaned up this song first when I joined this forum:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/45890/30-year-old-jazz-track-cleaned-up-using-ipad-tools
I think I found my earliest 01W recording! This one was an attempt at trying to sound like a new piano player on the scene named Michael Camilo who I got hooked on for a while. I didn't know how to make drum patterns very well here (its kind of laughable really) or quantize either, and I can hear some clipping going on (only 32 note polyphony).
I still have this sequences saved on floppy disks somewhere. I wonder it it's possible to convert it to MIDI file today? I'll have to google that...
Het. I have heard these and have an artifacts on my iPad! I even commented but didn’t memorize your handle.
I dug up another Korg keyboard creation from my early 90’s 4-track days and cleaned it up on the iPad. I think this may have done with a Korg T3, it’s been so long I can’t remember, but I do recall this was the first thing I made after getting an Alesis Quadraverb and played with delays and reverbs for the first time. Was really starting to experiment here with atmospheric sounds and reach out for something different than what I had to play/learn in school.
Used a lot of plug-ins to make this old cassette recording sound clean and fresh, MixBox, TB plug-ins, Red Rock compressor.
@dav that sounds super good!!!!
Thanks! I never shared those kind of tracks with anyone back then. Didn’t think people would like them. After all these decades maybe you are the first one to ever hear that track, lol.
Hey Dav! If you heard this already, pardon the duplication. If not, I thought you might enjoy this. I did this back in the early 90s on my 01/W. The DAW was Texture 2.0. This was recorded in one pass. You probably recognize some of the sounds.
Oh yes I had heard that before, and enjoyed hearing it again! Nice track. Has a lot going on. I do recognize some of those sounds, especially some of the percussion ones which I liked a lot. Not familiar with texture daw. What OS did that run on?
Texture was a DOS program that I ran on a PC. It was completely text based, i.e. Ctrl-this, Alt-that., etc. It would probably drive people crazy compared to what’s available today. With a little practice it became second nature. It was written by Roger Powell. Todd Rundgrens’ keyboard player in Utopia. I actually spoke with him once on a tech support call. My 01/W is currently in a closet in our spare bedroom. I can’t bring myself to part with it
Mikes Boat certainly floated mine @Dav . Didn’t sound dated at all, really enjoyed the mix of instruments and themes 🙏
