Echoes and Whispers - iOS-only Indie Rock album

This is my sixth iOS-only album, since I started releasing an album every year back in 2018.

This release is very guitar-centric and much rockier than some of my previous albums.

I've worked very hard to create interesting and exciting songs, with catchy vocal melodies and no boring bits. There is a strong post-rock influence in the arrangements, with dynamic instrumental sections and the odd sprinkle of textural weirdness.

I've also had the help of a couple of additional singers in the form of Iseult de Mallet Burgess (yes that's her real name) and Pauline Mykell who have provided backing vocals (and sometimes the main vocals) to some of the songs.

The album was recorded and produced with an iPad, with the addition of a vocal mic, an interface, a Les Paul, and some pedals.

All the tracking, mixing, and mastering was done in Auria, while the drums and synths were sequenced in Nanostudio 2 (with the help of 4pockets Multitrack to bring in the audio files).

The core guitar tones were created with pedals, using a Strymon Iridium for the amp and cab sims, with the addition of an EHX Big Muff and a Walrus 385 for the distortion tones. (There are some decent amp sims on the iPad of course, but I find it easier to get the sound I'm after with pedals)

Modulation and delay were added on the iPad, with Other Desert Cities and FAC Chorus featuring heavily.

Vocals were recorded with an SM7B into an SSL2, and the processing on most tracks consisted of the LA2 emulation in Mixbox, FabFilter Pro-Q3, and DDMF Magicverb.

Thanks to all who take the time to listen. My time on this forum has been devoted to learning as much as I can about songwriting, and while I know I still have a long way to go before I can write truly great songs, I'm also a long way ahead of where I was when I started on this trip back in 2013. I've written a lot of bad songs to get to the point where I can finally write better ones.

And it's amazing that with a minimum of resources we can all create studio-quality recordings on a mobile device. No need for studio time, just some spare time and an iPad. What a time to be alive.

The album is currently on its way to streaming platforms, I'll update the thread when it's live on Spotify and iTunes. Thanks for listening!

  • Oh yeah. Looking forward to listening to it!
And yes, she has a fantastic name. 🙂

  • Congratulations for this new release, Richard !

  • That’s what I love to see here! An IOS recorded album complete with apps used and how things were recorded. You’ve always been a great contributor to what I’ve always thought was one of the main purposes of this forum is, to use Audiobus and the IOS App world to create awesome music. Glad to see Auria is still rocking it for you as well.

  • listening now... lovely guitar swells off the top!

  • loving the female vocals on This Is How Our Hearts...

Whenever I listen to your stuff, I feel like I'm instantly transported back to the mid-90s when I was listening to lots of brit-pop guitar stuff.

  • "Secrets and Lies" might be my favourite track. Another solid album release! The songs are very well written and the production & instrumentation is really great all around. Like I mentioned above - this album would sit in perfectly with all the british guitar-type bands I was listening to heavily in the mid-90's.

  • A wonderful record indeed Mr Richard. Well mixed and sounds very professional. But I feel like I want to throw my opinion in that you can disregard. I’ve always thought on your songs in general that with your type of singing voice, you should attempt to bring your vocals a little more forward in most of your mixes, either by doubling them, or micro warmer, or something similar to give your vocals, a little more prominence. I think you have a great singing voice, and you should showcase it just a little more.

Thanks, the 90s influence is indeed strong and it's a period in music that I really love.

Thanks for listening, I think my singing voice is still a work in progress but I'll definitely consider making it more prominent in the future. Vocal levels are tricky to get right, and with guitar-based music it's always a challenge to balance the guitars with the voice.
