Whitewall Tires (Gadget 2)

When I first got started in iPad music making, I used Gadget a lot. I could never get used to the user interface. If they had just rotated the presentation 90 degrees clockwise, I probably would’ve used it more. Music goes left to right! This track started in Gadget, and @jwmmakerofmusic sort of inspired me to go back and revisit some of my old stuff. I routed some old stems into Cubasis and remixed it. Happy Friday!

Hebrew is right to left. Gadget is up and down. Whadya think of my song?

  • Ah, Vietnamese, then. I liked the guitar at 1:00, the organ at 1:45 and especially the guitar part at 2:45. For my taste the chord transitions were too slow at the beginning. But that’s just me. I can also instruct myself that I miss opportunities by not repeating something more or creating a groove.

I don’t remember any of those parts from my couch. Slow transitions at the beginning? But that’s what I do. Repeating is a good thing. I’m off to bed now. Have a nice, peaceful night’s sleep. Later, bro.

This means a lot to me that you were inspired by me. And the result is nothing short of spectacular! I just love the chord progressions you've used in this. :) The mix is super clean and the mastering is sublime. (I just usually mix down in Gadget itself, lol). Well done mate.

And I understand how the "up to down" presentation can throw a lot of people off. I'm used to it by now though. It also helps that I loved to muck about with Sunvox during the early days of iOS music creation (which uses an up-to-down tracker interface for programming notes and automation).

Believe it or not, what actually threw me off about Gadget 1 when I first got it wasn't the up-to-down interface but rather the lack of IFX in the mixer! Back then (2014), you only had the ability to send a track to the master reverb. But I got used to how Gadget did things and made musical sketches rather than full productions.

But trust me, Gadget 1 without IFX on my iPad Air 2 saved my sanity during these boring road trips where Mum would drag my father and me along to these Debbie Macomber book signings. Debbie's books are these "cosy nook" snoozefest books, basically literary crack for the elderly. 😂 And her presentations were just as dreadfully dull, so I'd pull out my iPad, put on my headphones, and noodle around in Gadget, creating those aforementioned musical sketches that I'd upload to Dropbox for future reference.

Gadget is so much more capable as a production environment these days with Gadget 2. You have IFX, IAPs, compatible apps with their IAPs (including the holy grail of compatible apps Module Pro), iPhone compatibility, just a (pardon the language) shitload of features! If Gadget 2 only ever gets compatiblity updates (making sure things don't break with the next iOS/iPadOS release), I'm totally fine with that.

Getting back to your track. I love how you have various sections in the track. It keeps my attention. :) I'm trying to do this with my own productions by first hand-notating musical sketches on my ReMarkable 2 e-ink tablet if I want to go beyond the 8-bar loop. (Although there's nothing wrong with the 8-bar loop format, and I do like to dive straight into Gadget rather than hand-notate beforehand! Though notating a musical sketch is how I crafted "OK GO!" and "The Collector's Heart" on my "Within Gadget" EP.)

Keep up the great work mate. :)

  • @jwmmakerofmusic Thank you so much, Jim! I’m off to bed in a few. I will have more to say tomorrow. Have a nice night!

Literary crack for the elderly. That’s priceless! Sounds like the title for my next song. BTW - I’m elderly.

Did you just say shitload? Shame on you.

i haven’t looked at Gadget for quite a while and I think i will start using it more. I was a little pissed that they want to nick me for $15 to restore Lisbon. I like it but I think I will take my honey bunny to the movies today, instead. I already have a “shitload” of synths. I’m sure I can find something else among my collection. Have a productive day. Talk to ya soon.

Well correction then, lol, it's literary crack for...I'll private message you. 😂 And I did try to trudge through one of Debbie's books, and it was an utter bore. Thin plot, "mischievous angels", suburban setting, bad prose, etc.

Did you just say shitload? Shame on you.

    Damn it, lol.

Did you try restoring mate? Lisbon is a great Trance synth. A little weaker in the low-end, but when layered with Montpellier (which is more of a rounded sound but had meaty low end), it's a tour de force!

I like it but I think I will take my honey bunny to the movies today, instead.

Sounds like a great plan mate. :)

I already have a “shitload” of synths. I’m sure I can find something else among my collection.

True, very true. For a quick high end for the Trance sound, can't go wrong with Phoenix. Lisbon is better geared towards the genre. Then again, Phoenix on its own is a decent Trance synth in of itself when blended with other sounds. If the "Trance" sound is your main lead but you need to fit it with other sounds (i.e. it's a secondary sound to the main melody), you'll want it less beefy, hence Phoenix.

Have a productive day. Talk to ya soon.

    Thanks mate. You too. 😎

Many years ago I had a Ford Mustang fastback with whitewalls. I miss those old cars. They had so much personality. As I was driving home from work this week I was noticing that all cars seem to look alike these days. Ahhh… memories. Have a beautiful day, my friend.

$15 to restore Lisbon iap? If you’ve bought it in the past you should be able to restore for free.
What happens if you hit “Restore Purchased Gadgets” at the bottom of the gadgets list?

  • You are right. I feel like such an idiot! It works just fine now. Thank you.
I will now go stand in a corner.
