Ranking Iceworks/Icegear synths
Was curious as to how everyone would rank these if forced to rank them in order from best to least best. I acquired Redshrike and LaGrange yesterday and love both (and they both sound way better in person compared to YouTube).
I’m gonna eventually get them all although I’m kinda on the fence with LaPlace. Leaning towards getting Kronecker next.
I know there’s an older thread from 2021 on this but it was more general than a comparison of strengths v “weaknesses “

i guess you already have Nambu ? Cause imho best synth in their portfilio..
I've only got Nambu & Lagrange installed at the moment.
The various oscillator types in Lagrange make it easy and fun to tweak.
Nambu takes a bit more effort to get things going...
Kronecker is unique - a 'clockwork synth'. Rhythmic.
Laplace was the first AUv3 I bought, so it's special to me. It does plucked sounds very well.
Mersenne is probably the third place.
I rarely use Lorentz, Redshrike, or Lagrange (and I haven't heard of Nambu yet! so off the the App Store).
The resonators are part of what makes the iceWorks synths unique, plus the powerful delay.
Nambu and Lagrange are definitely the best ones. From a visual and ux perspective they are the most evolved as well since they are more recent, but each synth is unique and worth getting. The early synths are very reminiscent of Mutable Instruments Eurorack modules in terms of sound.
Kronecker is definitely worth it.
I’ve gotta say, Laplace was my first and still my favourite…
A thought: Mersenne and Laplace are sort of specialty synths that I rarely use alone, BUT they are both very good at what they do and fit into mixes nicely: Mersenne for bells, chimes, melodic percussion & even bass; Laplace for strings (violin-ish), plucked sounds.
Not sure if I can rank them but Mersenne is the one I use the most and Redshrike is the one I use the least...
Not yet… I will though
As expected some of these responses are wildly varied!
At first Lorentz wasn’t even on my radar until I heard the resonator
I was quite shocked how easy LaGrange was to figure out!
If I could only have one, it would be Kronecker. It’s unlike anything else in my arsenal…
Actually I just heard Spider’s patches…I’m getting this one soon as my royalties hit 😎
It does sound incredible… it also has a cool look imho
I dont have Nambu yet, it’s the only one of theirs I don’t have. But I see nothing but praise for it so I’d say it’s a safe bet. It’s on my list for sure. Oh! I also don’t have Lorentz but it seems great.
For the ones I do have, Kronecker is my favorite. Truly a unique instrument capable of some really really cool sounds. Laplace is the king of physical modeling on iOS, imo. And Lagrange is just a powerhouse. The other 2 are far more specialized but each have their place. Mersenne can be very beautiful sounding.
LaPlace was the only one I’m still not impressed with via YouTube, but after hearing how much better Redshrike and LaGrange sounded in “real life” I’m not gonna let that color my decision!
I am amazed at how flexible these have been, and Redshrike surprised me…didn’t think it would be possible to make a Vangelis type sound but I already did lol
Oh yeah they’re super flexible. Lagrange is basically what? 6-8 synths in one? LaPlace can definitely do way more than it appears but it does sorta still stay in its own zone. Definitely worth having though. Especially if you like Karplus Strong and physical modeling.
Actually learning about different kinds of synthesis I’ve never really heard of before thanks to LaGrange, and it and Redshrike taught me about different kinds of noise I’d never heard of before (blue noise, for instance).
Royalties should hit tomorrow so I’m getting Nambu then. I’m blown away by how great it sounds; it literally sounds like hardware. And that’s with YouTube compression! One of my bandmates and I were talking about it and he said it sounds like thousands of dollars worth of gear …$17.99 actually feels like a steal which is incredible considering I’ve only once paid more than $14.99 for an app (Synclavier Go) which is in fact the ONLY reason I don’t have any of the moogs yet !
I second this. Mersenne seems sort of ‘one note’, but it blends so well with other sounds, and it’s bell tones are lovely. So don’t overlook the early Iceworks synths!
Oh man I heard some of the stuff on Doug’s channel and I’m gonna use Mersenne for our next Christmas album!
Synclavier Go is a great one to splurge on though! I haven’t wrapped my head around all the editing so I usually just tweak presets but it sounds great.
Nambu is next on my “big purchase” list I think. It’s between that and Twin3.
I love the Moog apps too, but if I had to chose one it’d be Animoog without a doubt. They usually have 1-2 huge sales a year so if you can hold out til may, I would. That’s Bobs bday (which I think we talked about previously). You may be able to snatch all 3 for the price of one.
This has been my approach on this developer. Ranking so personal, but fun to talk about like "who would win in a fair fight, a polar bear or a bengal tiger?"
Mersenne is on my list from another fun thread: "If I could only have 5 synths..." because it is so distinct from all the other synths on iOS. But I want LaPlace too. In large part given the RuSTik and Spidericemidas banks for these two.
But really I just automatically buy all dude's stuff. They're all pretty distinct, even the 2 bread and butterish ones (Redshrike, Lorentz.) stand out given the resonators he includes there, and his approach on GUI's. (Lorentz is so easy to get into) Really hard to choose. Sometimes I think If I could only choose 5 synths they would all be his, but it would be hard to choose only 5 among them. And I of course want the patch banks for each that have been made by forum comrades. RuSTik and Spidericemidas stuff for LaPlace and Mersenne
Interesting that someone mentioned the "early" synths. The dev has been around and doing synths since pre Audiobus: Argon, Xenon (a DAW collection of synths and sequencer) and Cassini, all I think gone from the store, but they established his very impressive resumé. Cassini is immense for example and many of the ideas in Nambu go all the way back to that one.
That’s the plan! Can’t wait til May!
Loving Nambu so far but did notice two things 1) it takes up a lot of cpu and has crashed a few times in GarageBand, and 2) oddly the screen resolution is much better as an AU in GB than in standalone!
I feel the same. I’m VERY curious to see what Satoshi has in store in the future …
Better than GeoShred or the MI Elements ports?
Glad you’re enjoying it but bummer about the crashing. Luckily the dev generally tackles all these problems. Hopefully I’ll have it in the next couple weeks or so.
I don’t have any SWAM instruments in Geoshred, just the factory content. So maybe just for me personally it’s the best. But I do love the MI ports in Strokes and Tera. Oh and Spectrum of course.
I honestly think it’s more of a GarageBand issue than with Nambu itself . I notice if I start a song with nambu and add a whole bunch of stuff it’s fine, but not the other way around
Strokes! Holy halibut! I just saw the latest. I must make it mine.
Oh it’s fantastic. One of my favorite apps right now by far. Just be advised, it’s a lot to wrap your head around and the exact opposite of “plug and play”. But it’s very rewarding once you learn. I still only know less than half the features and I’m having a blast.
I’m curious since you mostly work on GB. Are you playing everything by hand since it doesn’t support AU midi, or are you using something else?
