How to prelisten a track in AUM with headphones using a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4?
Dear Audiobus community,
First my setup:
- Ipad Pro 10.5 (with audio mini-jack)
- Focusrite Scarlett 4i4
- Anker usb-Hub (7 ports) through Apple camera adapter into the lightning port of ipad)
- AUM ios app
Everything in this setup works fine, except: when playing/looping live in AUM, I'm trying to audition an audio track on headphones so I can try a riff first before sending it to the speakers. But of course the other audio tracks should continue to play and be sent out through the speakers. (basically the same way a DJ does it). However, even with headphones plugged into the audio output of the Ipad (mini jack) in AUM, I can either select the headphones or the Focusrite.
Is there no way in AUM to route an audio track to either the headphones and audition it with that, or to the speakers?
Alternatively i can put my headphones into the Scarlett itself. But then again: how can i prelisten to a track without sending it to the speakers?
Do I have to set it all up in the Scarlett itself? You can configure the Focusrite via a PC. But how should this work in combination with AUM?
And last but not least: would such a routing be possible with the Audiobus app?
I would really appreciate any tips - thank you in advance!
Greetings, Duumvir

iOS only allows one output device you can’t use both the headphone out of the iPad and the audio interface out. You need a 4 output interface setup so that one output paid goes to your mains and another pair goes to your headphones. If you do that you can set up sends in AUM that let you have some tracks go to your headphones but not the mains.
Thanks for your reply! I tested it straight away: i plugged my headphones into the main out channel 3 of the Focusrite (the Scarlett has 4 main outs) and routed the audio track in AUM which i want to prelisten to this output. But i cant hear anything through my headphones…
Do i need a certain cable for this? Or should it work with my normal headphone jack plugging it into the main out?
Or has the Focusrite to be configured in a certain way?
It sounds like something isn’t configured right or are you saying you plugged the headphones into a line level output?
Yes, it seems so: i plugged my headphones into the line output 3 of the Focusrite and routed my audiotrack in AUM to this line out.
If this doesn’t work, how else could it be routed?
I don't have that interface. So, I don't know its configuration options. Line outs are not made to drive headphones. My interface lets me choose which outputs are sent to its headphone output. If your interface doesn't have that then you may need an inexpensive headphone amp.
I will try that tomorrow - thank you anyway for your kindness and engagement!
In general headphones don’t go into line level or microphone jacks
Just the headphones
It looks like focusrite has an app to configure which outputs are sent to its headphone output
I don’t have the Focusrite, but if it’s 4 in and 4 out, it’s possible the headphone output is duplicating outputs 1 and 2 (for left and right). In which case, if you pipe your real mix to outputs 3 and 4 you should be able to hear your previews on 1+2/headphones. You’d need to set up two output buses in AUM, one going to 3+4 for your main output and the other to 1+2 for previews.
It looks like the configuration app is for Mac or Windows
That seems to be a pretty good and creative idea - Thank you very much!!
And yes, espiegel 123, the configuration software for the Focusrite is for Win and Mac only. Maybe here the routing to the headphones can also be configured. I will check this also.
Thank you anyway!
I have Focusrite 8i6 which has two headphone outs by default on channels 1&2 and 3&4
I can record two musicians simultaneously, give each their own mix in their headphones, and send output to speakers on channel 5&6.
You can use the app to reconfigure the routing, though I prefer to retain the 1-1 default routing on the Focusrite and reroute in AUM.
In other words, what @espiegel123 says
I tried this, but it doesnt work: first the the 3/4 output cannot be regulated via the monitor control, and second also the on the 3/4 output routed signal is constantly on the headphone output (and cant be eliminated).
In will give another try with the Scarlett 8i8, maybe that works - i will give a report here!
Do you know someone with a Mac or Windows computer ? If so, you could configure the 4i4 there.
I have tried that on a Win PC - but i couldnt find a way to configure the Focusrite in such a way, that the 3/4 in AUM goes to the main output and the 1/2 to the headphone. There seem to be only very limited possibilities to change the routing to the headphones output. But maybe i dont understand the way of configuring the Focusrite in the correct way…
Sorry it didn’t work. It must be the way it’s configured. On my MOTU M4 the headphones always duplicate 1+2, and I often use 3+4 for control voltages from MiRack, so totally separate from what’s going out via 1+2/headphones.
Thanks anyway - your idea was pretty clever!
I recommend contacting Focusrite support and asking how to configure the 4i4 so that the headphones monitor only 1&2 or 3&4. I am pretty sure that is possible from comments I have seen.
I finally got it! It is indeed possible to route the Scarlett 4i4 in such a way, that it is possible to prelisten a certain AUM Channel, before it goes to the mainout. But it has to be done with the Focusrite-Control-Software, and it was not easy for me to finally get the right setting. But now its done - thank you all for your kind support!
Have much fun making your music!
Cheers, Duumvir
