A small magickal working using Koala: Walking Widdershins

An invocation to be uttered whilst walking anti clockwise around a church.

“Abaisit I wolx, and widdersyns start my hair." - early English

As any fule kno, walking ‘widdershins’, aka ‘against the sun’, that is, anti-clockwise, around a sacred site is a sure fire recipe for trouble. Just ask the girl kidnapped by the King of Elfland in the popular fairytale, or poor Childe Roland who to the Dark Tower came, aiming to sort out the resultant mess in Browning’s famous poem.

But of course those looking to actively consort with such capricious forces as might be raised by this injudicious pedestrianism might also choose to consciously take a widdershins wander round their local churchyard to precipitate the encounter. Providing, of course, suitable precautions have been taken.

So: a little working for the widdershins-minded. An auditory mediation, a sigil in sound to accompany the bell, the book, and the candle, an aid to focus the necessary vril… Cthonicist assumes no responsibility for any forces thereby raised.

Original samples warped in Koala, mixed live and recorded out as File Player loops as a stereo mix into AudioShare. Enjoy responsibly.

  • Ooh, I like the coil vibe. Might have wandered CCW around churches by accident at one time or another. Precautions? Could have been wise.

  • Very dark. The vibe reminded me of some art film of the late 60s/70s like this one
The original soundtrack was by Jimmy Page but he was replaced in the main release by a Bobby Beausoleil. The music in the version in the link is by yet another person but it fits the vibe and it better quality than the original versions I could find.

    From the description:
    A film by Kenneth Anger.
Video extracted and re-worked from Lucifer Rising.
Audio Original By Bobby Beausoleil, extracted from Lucifer Rising.

    Kenneth Anger- Lucifer Rising 1972

Lucifer Rising is a short film by director Kenneth Anger. The film was completed in 1972 but was only widely distributed in 1980. Anger began filming around 1966, hiring a young musician named Bobby Beausoleil to act and compose the soundtrack. The film was abandoned in 1967 because Anger claimed the film footage had been stolen by Beausoleil. (Beausoleil and others said that Anger had simply spent all the money for the film). Anger then used some of the existing footage in another short film, Invocation of My Demon Brother. Beausoleil was convicted of killing Gary Hinman under the orders of Charles Manson in 1970. Anger began filming again several years later, with British singer Marianne Faithfull appearing in the film. Jimmy Page was brought in to record the soundtrack, but after he had a falling out with Anger, he was replaced by Beausoleil, who wrote and recorded the music in prison.

    • Kenneth Anger - The Magus
    • Bobby Beausoleil - Himself
    • Donald Cammell - Osiris
    • Marianne Faithfull - Lilith
    • Myriam Gibril - Isis
    • Chris Jagger - Man in Yellow Tunic
    • Jimmy Page - Man Holding Stella of Revelation "

@tyslothrop1 : thank you, high praise indeed! Coil were one of my fave bands, who I got to interview in my first career as a music journalist. (And I was at Uni with John Balance (saw his, er ‘farewell performance’ when he quit, involving two chairs wrapped in barbed wire in front of the campus church, him naked, and rather a lot of pig blood.)

@AlterEgo_UK : thank you! I see what you mean. My introduction to Kenneth Anger was his scandalously interesting book Hollywood Babylon, and, later, the homo erotic magic movie Scorpio Rising. Hadn’t seen this one. But, again, company I am very proud to be in company with! :)

Side note: also vaguely knew Chris Jagger when he was shilling for some musical equipment company, saw him at places like BMF, Music Messe and NAMM

  • Fantastic work. As usual!

    ++++++++++++++++++

    Another very cinematic production!
Truly, a dark and quite horrifying pinging sound.
And the mention of church makes it even darker.
    Great recording, and excellent work!!!
