Delta Octantis - solo piano using Pianoteq (still on desktop at the moment, sorry)
This is one of a group of piano solos named after the constellation Octans.
I worked out everything first on iOS as usual for me. I like to generate ideas to midi files using a variety of apps. In this case, arranging chord progressions and sequencing with arps and other stuff. Then I prune it all down using Xequence to something manageable and export it to my desktop where I fine tune it using Digital Performer playing Pianoteq. I really like Pianoteq and look forward to the iOS version.

p.s. Does anyone know if/how you can embed the bandcamp player inside these posts like soundcloud can?

This is absolutely brilliant. Do you like Maurice Ravel? I am hearing a bit of that.
If you figure out the Bandcamp player, please share. One day it just stopped working.
Wonderful stuff. I listened to both albums. I enjoyed Sigma Octanis and the Violin Concerto. That was a lot of work! You handled the PianoTeq very well. Would it be as good on iOS? What strings did you use?

Thanks for listening ! I love Ravel and now that you mention it I hear a bit of Le Tombeau de Couperin for a few measures; but not intentional; I owe more credit to StepPolyArp for being one of the apps I used in my midi sketches
Thanks - I hope you didn't get ear fatigue. I spent a bit of time on these for sure. The strings are from the East West Symphonic Orch which I edit on Digital Performer.
Pianoteq released version 8 at the end of last year and I really noticed a bump in the quality of the sounds that surprised me. My Mac Pro is from 2010 and the processors on recent iPads must be improved from that so I would expect Pianoteq to work fine ... that's what I'm hoping anyway.
Thanks again to both of you - I value your attentions.
Wow there are some great pianists here on this forum. Exciting and entertaining to listen to... frenq
Very nice, love it!
Well constructed piece with nice dynamics and sonic range - very impressive! I enjoyed it!
Thanks for your kind remark! My keyboard skills are pretty meager; I build my pieces more like sculptures; adding and deleting and rearranging the midi.
Hey thanks! I've always thought of you as more of a sample and weird sounds guy but I see you've lately been doing some piano stuff yourself. Pianoteq has some interesting ability for sound design; and some things can get pretty far afield from actual pianos.
Thanks for commenting on the construction; I put a lot of thought into that. Pianoteq has pretty good dynamic range and I liked going from pounding to tinkly and in between.
Never tried Pianoteq yet but it has interested me since it came out. You mentioned the iOS version, is it announced?
There's been a thread here about it arriving soon; it seems like a legit prediction but no official announcement yet.
Did I understand this correctly? Was this entirely sequenced? (That is, generated in the first instance by midi generators of one sort or another, rather than physically played.) If so, it is hella impressive, it sounds like it is being played by a very skilful human pianist.
Thanks! yes, it began entirely on iOS with chords playing arps but after I whittled it down and transferred it to my desktop I did add some embellishments by actual 'playing' here and there. I do my best to program in dynamics and also a tempo map so that it doesn't sound so mechanical.
Well, you definitely succeeded!
Can only agree with all of the very positive comments above 👌
Thanks Geo, with all this encouragement I think I'm going to be pummeling the forum with more ditties now.
I listened again for the Pisnoteq, but the piece is great. Which piano is that? Do you use others on your album?
Thanks again! Your attention is highly appreciated. This was the Steingraeber model called Recording 3. I tried to vary each piece. I just posted one using a honkytonk setting. Also the felted strings are nice for softer pieces.
This is great stuff and a really good demo of Pianoteq! What apps were you using for the midi? All Xequence?
Thanks for listening! I have many arps and sequencers now and I don't always keep track. But I think I used, in no particular order, StepPolyArp, Arpbud, and more recently I've been getting into using cykle as an arp. Each have unique idiosyncrasies. I record directly into Midi Tape Recorder or sometimes Helium. Then import that into Xequence which is easier for me to edit. I like to improvise on and on that way so it always needs a lot of pruning down and reordering sections, etc. But then I export that to my desktop DAW because MIDI editing the details is much easier for me there. Bigger screen and mouse helps.
Still, I find iOS is the my best go-to 'sketch pad' for ideas and I don't think I would want to work without it now.
I never thought about importing from Helium into Xequence but I’ll give that a try, thanks! Don’t have StepPolyArp but it’s on my list as I really want a super in depth arpeggiator.
I didn’t even realize Cykle could be used that way!
Beautiful track! Also now I remember why I wanted to buy StepPolyArp if it will ever go on sale..
Thanks! I've had SPA for quite a while and I'm still finding new things about it and ways to use it.
