Multitrackstudio just got updated (version 1.4 brings automation and chords keyboard + more)
MultitrackStudio for iPad 1.4 (August 22, 2014):
Overview bar (above tracks) shows editor data while scrolling an editor. Works for all editors except the Song Editor.
Editors: needle no longer moves while scrolling with one finger. Use two fingers to move needle too.
Opening track editor: height is identical to existing open track editors (if any).
Editors scroll faster after scrolling in the same direction repeatedly.
Track name box flashes after closing the track editor, making the track easier to find.
Audio input level fader now appears in the main view when it's needed (the Input button is removed).
Audio track: input selector shows level meters even if Rec button isn't engaged.
New 'Chords' onscreen keyboard (play chords with one finger).
Onscreen keyboard: keys can be wider (zoom with two fingers on the gray bar at the top).
Reverb effect now has Lo Freq, Lo Mult, Hi Cut, Spin en Width knobs.
Uses Audiobus 2.1.2 SDK (iOS 8 ready). iOS 7 or newer is now required because of this.
Extension Pack (in-app purchase) now includes mixer and effect automation.
Fixed: audio editors could flicker while scrolling backwards.
If you already bough the extension pack, you automatically get mixer and effects automation. Doug, I know you already made a video for MTS when it was released, but since the app received several great updates I really think you should do another in depth tutorial.

Thanks Maarten
Nice bit of news for the morning.
Thanks Mr. Bremmers!
Looks like a nice app. Anyone out there able to give any more info about the chord feature that's just been added?
I haven't had a chance to try out the new features, but I just wanted to say Multitrackstudio for iPad is a super slick DAW that's so easy to use. I was expecting that, but what I didn't expect was how well everything was thought out within the app and interface. It's all the little things that when you realize are there make you say "oh, that's cool!". Examples for me are how easy it is to plug other apps in as an effect on a track and on the reverb/effects loop and final mastering section, the ability to use soundfonts directly without the need for a 3rd party app, the song editor window which allows you to easily add/copy/paste/delete whole sections, the intuitive and easy to edit piano roll. And of course this currently being the only DAW that can do any odd time signature AND changing time signatures at will in a song is what sold me on the app in the first place. All that in a super low-overhead (20 meg) package.
@Boone51: In the screenshot below you can see a picture of the new chord feature. Te black and white keys trigger the chords. When you hold down the Maj7, 7 or 6 key in addition to a chord, you get a more complex version of that chord. At the far left you have a velocity slider (then one under the word "options" and to the left of the chord keys you find a smaller slider that lets you select different inversions for the chord played. The combination of these two sliders and the chords keys makes for a very expressive way of recording midi notes. Hope this answers your question
Just wanted to say that I've been experimenting with VST hosts on Windows PC and really am starting to enjoy the Windows version of MultiTrackStudio. I auditioned about 12 different free options and MultiTrackStudio was probably the best I found. Would consider the iPad app if I continue to learn and use the Windows version.
@ Maarten - Is the chord feature in the Windows version?
@StormJH1: No, the desktop version does not have this feature.
Yet another comment which I must prefix with forgive my ignorance, but I think I have Cubasis pretty well mastered (in my amateurish way , are there any folks out there who can/would say that this is significantly better or if it is can you say in what way?
Perversely, I want the answer to be "YES" because at 30 bucks I might then be prepared to splash out, but without some real advantages it's hard to justify.
I'm sure there are many bits and bobs, and I'd love to hear about them if they're important to you, but I guess the three things I would switch/pay for might be:
A) Ease of piano roll editing
IAA stability/integration
C) Getting things actually done
Quick thoughts?
Oh, that c) is the one, isn't it?
I don't own either app but I can say that I've almost purchased this app several times because I get to believing that the lack of an all-tracks/all parts arrange overview would keep me focused. Seems like a tape machine with deep single track editing. Very appealing.
I go back and forth been MTS for iPad and BM2. I have to say that MTS, like syrupcore surmised, has a layout and flow that helps me focus and produce. I got faster on MTS, which has since made me faster on BM2...and then I get faster still on MTS. There is something less precious and more utilitarian when compared to cubasis, which means I get less distracted-
Also the stuff I do really benefits from direct sample import from Audioshare, which beats cubasis and BM2.
I want MTS to have the mpc stuff BM2 has...but right now I use both.
The tape machine idea is exactly what the dev stated as his goal, along with an emphasis on performance rather than sequencing and piano roll editing- which is interesting because the piano roll editing is brilliant too
Dammit.
Must...resist...
Me....too. 'Specially hard on a Friday afternoon. Old payday habits die hard...
Each daw shows me more about how I can work, want to work, and what kind of work I want to make. MTS really gets out of my way on the one hand, and urges me on in another. Even though there is a song edit view, the focus is on how things sound not how they look
Bought it. Payday after all. Got the extension pack to keep from having anything to blame. Spent ten minutes thinking "Fuck. Old school. Where are all my flashing twiddly bits?" Felt the reality crash after the appaholic high. Ate dinner (good tonight). Came back and opened the manual which is simple straightforward stuff. Suddenly felt the beginnings of a warm feeling that comes when you remember or recognize something. It's a recording studio. Familiar. Like the ones I used to rent for a pound a track an hour under the railway bridges in Brixton and Stockwell. Click track and all. I think it's going to be just fine. Maybe better than that. I'm going inside and I may be some time...
I would be really glad if a stripped-down version existed where guitar amps and fx wer available as optional...
If you are mainly a guitar player like me, (most) chances are you've already got at least one good modeller/processor in your iPad/iPhone.
If the dev is still listening, I'd strongly suggest him to consider this option. The app is not certainly cheap, and this kind of redundance of resources kinds of keeps me from considering an actual purchase. Just like @syrupcore, "I've almost purchased this app several times"...
I don't see it in app description...Do it has any IAP? Thanks.

Yeah, this kind of nails it. The app had two lower intro prices but hasn't been on sale yet. I basically would want this for the MIDI functionality that Auria doesn't have, but 30 bucks is a bit steep. Developers always ask "what is the value of my product versus what I can actually charge for it." - but most of us already have other DAW's. So the question for me is "can I justify this purchase in terms of the ADDED features this app has versus the one(s) I already own. At 30 dollars, probably not. 20 - maybe. That's not to say the app isn't worth 30 dollars - you could argue it's "worth" 100 - just not to me (yet).
I will say that whereas BM2 loads unncessary features an content into a HUGE package, MTS does it within an absurdly small file size. So that's a major argument in favor of the app. But no, the guitar plugin did not look impressive versus the guitar apps I have via AB and IAA.
I like it plenty (and am sleep-deprived because of it this morning), but you're right: We want the best of the best, this bit from this and that from that. BM3 maybe For now, what I really like about this DAW variation is the narrow gap between the idea and the work.
Really great app! Here is my first cover
Ipad 3, MultitrackStudio, guitar tone - Jamup through iaa, song properties 24bit/48 khz all works fine.
The tempo changes in a song might do it for me. Don't really have that ability in any of my current daws. And the small file size might make me ditch BM2. 30 bucks isn't bad if it's a kick ass daw.
This looks really cool. I look forward to emerging from my BM2 corner $50 poorer after the sampler is added, if that happens

Great playing in that demo! Way above my skill level, that's for damn sure.
Any performance issues on iPad 3 as you layered tracks together? I have an iPad2, which is said to be pretty close in performance. For example, I can run Auria, but start getting error messages, etc if I use effects or don't freeze tracks.
Thanks.
After import drums ( DrumPerfect) , bass ( garageband ) and record guitars I had 16 tracks. No I hadn't any performance issues when mixing.I use auria after mixdown for final "mastering" ( fabfilter limiter only).
So, in the PC version, the piano roll editor controls notes for VST plugins, which can be synths, etc.
In the iPad version, then, does the piano roll control notes through MIDI? Or only for apps that work with IAA?
For example, Sunrizer has AudioBus but not IAA (IIRC). Does this mean I could record into MTS with AudioBus, but can't use the internal piano roll unless it's an IAA plugin? Is that how it works?
Sunrizer does have IAA...
It is possible to sequence midi for Audiobus audio inputs in MTS. I don't do it much, it's more steps than using IAA. I'll try to find a clear step by step for you...
I'm not a midi/synth guy. But i can control ims-20 through Multitrackstudio (virtual midi) and record audio out (ims-20) through audiobus back in Multitrackstudio.
@C_Ph
Have you been able to use the AB in MTS since the update?
In the past I've made it work but I keep forgetting the steps to set it up...this is the AB forum, but I don't find AB as simple as IAA in MTS...
Yes. I did test multitrackstudio with audiobus after last update ( version 1.4).
Open multitrackstudio-> new song (24bit/44.1 khz) -> add click track, add midi track , add audio track-> open audiobus-> add ims-20 in audiobus input -> add MtStudio in audiobus output-> open MtStudio-> studio settings ->devices -> midi output device - ims-20-> midi track change MTSi on external (ims-20) -> switch midi track to record mode -> use MtStudio midi keyboard (or add midi notes in editor). Switch audio track to rec and record audio from audiobus.
Thanks @C_Ph for the full rundown, that helps me check my steps.
I'm having a devil of a time trying to get Thor and now other synths into MTS with this method, I'm hearing distorted over-amped signal monitoring in MTS-
One weird thing is that the Audiobus input gain slider is maxed to the right and unmovable. But this is true when I use BM2 and Thor in Audiobus, with no such bad audio.
I'm on iPad 4, airplane mode all background apps shut down, am exchanging notes with MTS dev on his forum.
One question, what is the input gain setting inside Audiobus all about? It doesn't move, and is maxed.
