JAZZstanbul / 1st track from 1st album
I happened to listen to this track from 2019 and still liked it. It got a bit better after remastering.
It's got some old timey apps all right. IFretless Sax, BeatHawk trombones, Thumbjam Cello and a piano/bass part I played on a Kawai MP11se while I was in Turkey.
I tried to sub a SWAM sax but, frankly, it lost that quirky feeling. So here is a listen into my quirky, murky past. I hope it still stands up.

I can see why you still like it. I’m not sure if it’s my headphones but it sounds like the mix is a bit hot. I got a little bit of distortion in some of the low end but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all. I always enjoy your bass parts. Never boring, always adding something to the mix.
@MadeofWax, I agree, the mix sounds hot. The bass comes through well at 4:30, IMO.
I mixed this using a pair of AudioEngine A5+bt speakers. Perhaps don’t know my way around them. Will check with headphones.
The bass patch is from a keyboard split on the Kawai MP11se I was playing at the time.
Not bad for the first track from an up and coming young chap… agree about the distortion (and the quirky trombones) but the music makes up for it 👍
Truly, magnificent and melodic jazz composition!
I am loving this with my morning coffee!
And the artwork is so cool!!!
Always love and enjoy your production, Mike!!!
Thank you!
@GeoTony, indeed, distorted and quirky. That’s pretty good much how it feels these days.
@ReneAsologuitar, what kind of coffee do you drink? It seems to keep you in a great mood, bro.
It is so film noir with great sax lines and piano harmonies, my kind of music, but this deserves a better mix, frenq
Thanks @Frenq. Maybe I’ll give it another try!
I’d love to hear the SWAM Sax or Flugelhorn on the solo part.
“Sensual Sax” is just too cheesy and stuck in the uncanny valley for my tastes… it has a vibrato from the 1930’s that no one used after 1950 unless they were making a musical joke.
Maybe a whole album of different mixes of this project to show the power of MIDI to re-jigger an ensemble.
In my business we have an editors term… “Stet”. Let stand as-is. The music is very good. Don’t sweat the details. Nice one, old boy.
@McD actually, it’s iFretless Sax, but point taken. I’ll post a track with SWAM Sax shortly.
Thx @Paulieworld. Pls give a listen to the SWAM version when I post it.
