I like that uploaders can completely opt out but it doesn't mean listeners will not be turned off from the service in general. I wonder how it will affect embeds?

  • Sounds like for now it's only premiem content, not so much the underground stuff most people listen to. At least for now.

People are complaining, but at the same time if everyone was actually paying to use Soundcloud, it'd be a non-issue.

  • I wonder if 'everyone was paying to use soundcloud' if there would be any soundcloud. Or at least soundcloud as we know it.

Happy to pay for things of value and soundcloud provides value. Not really interested in what I think though. Wondering about how this move will affect the service as we know know it. What's Soundcloud 18 months from now?

I'm not complaining. Thier product, not mine. Just interested.

  • Since v.3 soundcloud is a consumer product. I only use now the desktop version since the mobile versions are useless for artists. The app store ratings show how stupid that is..... as marketing it's great of course and we all know that they don't care about independent musicians. Money is the only way! Now there are more consumers than artist who feeds their community. So it will change more and more to a facebook-twitter like soundcloud thing. For me it's a bit sad but since there is no real competition they can do what they want. I hate soundcloud but if i want to reach a few people with my music i have to use it.

I have found some fantastic new independent music on soundcloud, much more than on my clear channel controlled radio station. When their privacy policy changed and they let Universal studios have some strange control, I noticed people calling for boycotts of their service. This march towards feudal facebookism is inevitable in free (as in fee) systems.

Here is a good read, http://www.cnet.com/news/soundcloud-amps-up-ways-for-artists-to-get-paid-the-price-ads/. Puts an interesting spin on who gets paid from the ads.
