SOUND: Apps vs hardware

edited April 2023 in General App Discussion

When I compare my hardware grooveboxes (using samples) to app alternatives I normally hear a pretty noticable difference in sound. A lot of times good hardware samplers sound a bit fuller, direct and more cohesive. Even though it’s basically also just some software with AD/DA convertors.

Aside from the convertors I’m convinced there’s still a lot of magic in terms of sound in the coding. I notice a lot of apps still lack in the sound department when compared to hardware boxes. I really need to put in work and plugins to make it sound in the same ballpark.

Does anyone else experience this?

I notice however that some apps seem to sound a little bit better than average. Groove Rider for instance.

I really want to embrace Drambo, but even my model:samples sounds quite a bit better with a lot less options.

Whats your take/experience on this and which apps do you feel sound better then others?

  • There is a lot of talk about the psychological effect of hardware versus f.e. software instruments. When I bought the Softube Model-84 it immediately reminded me of my 106’s when I had them. It really did come close (near perfect). There are however also a lot of emulations that catch the character but still doesn’t make it. I’ve got a Lyra-8 and and MakeNoise 0-coast but still can not find a worthy alternative that comes close. There is a certain something that makes the difference.
