Soft Reeds - sampled reed Instruments improvisation (Yamaha PSR-E473 and iPad)
One of the main reasons I bought a Yamaha PSR-E473 is its built-in USB audio/MIDI interface. Especially as it connects directly (no driver needed) to an iPad.
For this improvisation, I layered a soprano sax from the PSR-E473 and a single reed organ sample in Samplewiz 2 on the iPad. So two reed instruments.
The soprano sax tone and character are overall even across the keyboard. But the tone and playback rate of the reed organ varies because, as there’s only one sample in the patch, it is heavily transposed in the lower and higher octaves. The contrast between the 2 creates a nice harmonic movement.
The sample is from my Reed Organs sample set.
Recorded to a USB flash drive via the PSR USB to device port.
I was looking for a music visualizer but finally realized that simply playing the file in Steinberg Wavelab looked pretty cool!

Hi interesting about the Yamaha PSR-E473. I got the PSRX 600 , is it possible to connect it as you do to an IPad ?
Nice improv. Reminds me a little of some of Michael Nyman’s stuff. Also - I like your idea re using Wavelab as a visualiser! Hadn’t thought of that.
Yamaha keys and Ipad: the best combination!
I never played a PSR-SX600 but I think it does. Many current PSR models have the USB to host connector and buit-in audio interface and can connect to a smart device. But of course anyone wishing to buy one should verify this before buying.
Here's a photo of my setup, iPad is connected via an Apple CCK.
Nice setup thanks. In maintime I was reading the manual and yes PSRx the USB to host connector , I must work out that.
Thanks for the compliment!
And Wavelab does look great, though it can be daunting too.
Indeed, simple and a lot of fun!
I bought the monitors last week because the E473 speakers are a bit underwhelming even if their sound is interesting. But monitors may not be necessary with larger PSRs. And that makes for a cleaner setup.
Lovely sounds, and the set-up is so nice to the eyes!
Your keyboard playing is so loved, so relaxing.
Nicely done!
Hi Rene,
Thank you for your comment!
I am glad you like both the music and the setup.
I am very touched by your words on my playing.
Quirky and enjoyable, very nice !
Hi GeoTony,
Many thanks!
