SampleTank's on sale for 9.99. Is it worth the money, RAM and nag-ads?

Part of me wants to get it for convenience, but another part of me thinks I can get the same thing done in other ways e.g. soundfonts.

Dropping 30 bucks for the complete package (the "everything" IAP is $19.99), seems like a lot of money.

  • You do get a lot of sounds for the money, but I have convinced myself of the same as you, other ways to skin a cat.

It's just my personal meaning of course but that i bought Sample Tank was a good choice for me. Nearly every track i made in the past had sounds of it included. I bought the piano pack, the strings pack (which i use[d] a lot) and the Miroslav Mobile Edition. Another good thing that it's a universal app.

Edit: This is with ThumbJam still my go to for acoustic sounds on iOS!
Here is a track i made mainly with this apps awhile ago and played live on my iPad via ThumbJam. It's full of FX but i like SPACE ;)

  • @Cinebient Good stuff. I agree with your thoughts on Sample Tank. You can get round it, like most things, but why struggle with the flow? I use ST often, especially for supporting bits and pieces/tracks and doubly especially when I'm sketching out a quick idea and want a solid 'xxxx' and right now rather than wandering off through fifty other apps looking for one thing but in the end finding something else (which can be fun and all but doesn't help get the job at hand actually closer to completion).

  • A recent Sampletank thread got a bit ugly, but there are opinions to be found there. Also, John at Music App Blog did a rather lengthy review including the IAP with some interesting reader comments.

While I don't agree with some of IKM's practices, the sale price for the app itself seems fair. I would suggest just the app if you're on the fence about buying both the app and the IAP. You don't have to get the whole kit and caboodle. There will be another sale.

  • I think the value of the app is good, but 850MB (or more) of storage for a glorified sample/SoundFont player? That's tough to sell to anyone on a 16GB device, which has like 13GB of actual storage.

BS-16i works, and I just store my soundfonts in DropBox and import them in as needed. I could store them all in the app if I had space, but it's nice to have that choice.

  • I have to choose between music and gaming. A lot of these games take up a lot of storage!

  • I am really impressed with most of the sounds in SampleTank; especially the Grand Piano variations. I sometimes think I like it better than my Yamaha MOX6 synth keyboard's piano sounds; depending on the mix. The ST Grand Piano sound has a special warmth and sweetness to it that makes me want to improvise for hours.

I paticularily like many of the drum kits, which I drive from a Korg padKONTROL, an external MIDI drum controller. ST plays back all the dynamics of velocity control; for real drumming expression. Most other iOS drum apps do not respond to MIDI velocity.

It is a memory hog; especially with all the IAP add ons. I am running out of space on my 64GB iPad 3; and will probably have to purchase a new iPad Air when it comes out this fall, with a minimum of 128 GB.
