Ralphy’s Rhumba
Last we heard, Ralphy’s quest had taken him to Rhumbania, a closed and secretive society. Rhumbanians avoid contact with outsiders and it is rare for recordings like this to make it out. The soloists about mid way through are believed to be members of the Rhumbanian Glee Club.
The back story…
So my daughter went to Cuba and brought me back a pair of claves. They looked and sounded different from the claves I was familiar with and I sampled them directly into the iPad. They are heard throughout the song. She also brought me back a really cool woven straw hat but that didn’t sound as good. While wearing the hat I spent a good 10 minutes researching Cuban Rhumbas and became an expert on the subject (uhhhh…. yeah). Anyway, I know I got the rhythm right but likely not much else. I did have fun though.

Excellent! As I listened, lots of ideas came to mind, and you seemed to anticipate them before me. I like the endless variety. It never settled into a repetitive loop. Several unexpected key changes. I like this a lot.
Edit: I listened again. Great arrangement technique. Are you the dude who played in Fly By Night? This is really fun to listen to.

Fly By Night!!! Every bit as good as the Tonight Show band. I envy you. I played in a little band called Tazz Rikki. We played all the clubs… Red Lion, McCabes, Shamrock, Andy’s, and anything else we could play (and get paid). Good times. I dig your arrangements. I hope you post more. Have a great night!
