ah cool i didn't catch that one.

  • “Because there are no samples, the file size is just a tiny fraction of that required by other virtual instruments, making Pianoteq perfect for any laptop.”

    Interesting..

  • A phone and a decent 88 note midi controller gives you a stunning piano. Amazing.

  • There’s just one thing missing from that equation: a piano player. Luckily I know a few :)

  • Modartt still hasn’t confirmed if it is stand alone or auv3 compatible.

    It’s got to be Auv3

  • Time to re-do the AudioBus Piano Shootout Championship Games again when this comes out.

Gosh I hope so. It would be so cringe if it wasn’t

So much waiting… I prefer to just see an annoucement when it’s fully baked.
I think this one is going to be pricey and set a new pricing target for IOS apps.
There’s this whole segment of keyboardists that live on:

    https://forums.musicplayer.com/forum/28-the-keyboard-corner/

They are the potential target audience for this one. I poked around there to see any interesting comments and found this opinion:

“Sounds rather synthetic for solo piano but how about cutting through a band?“

That’s been stated here by a pretty serious student of the piano. He doesn’t believe in the quality of the sound. I think the importance of it is the resource shift from large memory samples to a physical model that’s “good enough” and runs on light weight hardware. M1 iPads should run multiple instances if they ship as an AUv3. Many desktop products don’t… still we wait.

We'll see. Pianoteq Stage edition, which contains two different piano packs and is already more full-featured and flexible than anything available on iOS, sells for $139, and allows you to use it on MacOS, Windows, and/or Linux (yes, with a single license you can install on all of them simultaneously). I halfway expect Modarrt to somehow integrate iOS licensing with their desktop version, though I confess I don't know how it would happen. If not, I expect the iOS version to sell for a reasonable price. We'll find out soon.

  • So what is so special about this piano based app the name is new to me. Seems a lot of hype surrounding it?

it sounds great, 55 mb in size but more than that it has a feel to it that samples don't give.

makes you want to play it.

not just an acoustic modelled piano it can be a Rhodes or a guitar. of course that's extra cost.

Modeled, not sampled, and with a lot of flexibility in how you get your tone. Sampled pianos suffer massively from limitations in how many velocity layers they have, which doesn't allow for very expressive playing. Plus they take up several gigs of space.

If you're just trying to record a loop for a hip hop song or whatever, this won't matter much, but if you're trying to play a piano like a real piano, it matters. Pure Piano, Ranvenscroft etc have far too few velocity layers. Try for yourself and see how they jump. A tool like Midi Curve from the Victor Porof Midi Tools pack is useful for checking this.

The JAX pianos have great velocity expression but exhibit buggy behaviour and have a really - like, really - terrible UI.

That's not to say that Pianoteq doesn't have its critics. Some think it sounds a bit fake compared to sampled pianos. But I'm definitely keen to see how it compares.

@Gavinski Cheers for the info interesting to see what reception it gets once on the scene.

    "How DARE you!".

  • This boyo got my back

  • Good news it's free.

    Bad news IAP.

Maybe we get a free piano to entice us.

  • Please note: all instruments will run in demo mode (a few keys are disabled) until you purchase a Pianoteq STAGE license (unlocks two instruments), or link it to an existing user account (with a valid Pianoteq license) on our website.
