The evils of vinyl!

I enjoyed this, and thought it might provide some well needed distraction while people wait for Hilda to drop 😁

  • Yeah, I believed in maintaining a turntable back in the days when there were lots of albums that never made it to CD format, but these days almost everything I'm interested in is available in some digital format or another. I still have a stack of records and a turntable, but somehow I never get around to dusting it off the turntable and playing any of the records.

  • It's bad for your health too:

  • I loved sampling off of old vinyl and grabbing rare/weird/forgotten albums from garage sales. But the space they take up and the olde moldy dust smell just wasn't worth it. If I were loaded and could dedicate a small room to retro audio that would be sweet.

  • You just need one of these to get rid of all the issues he talks about… £460,000 to you 😊

    Good video.

By the way: huge amounts of plastic go into the production of vinyl records, and it looks like half the people don't even listen to them because they don't have a turntable. :o

  • I read an article about how Japanese are found of high end hifi ( that explain perhaps with Japan Hifi industry do very good amps and pre amps ), so crazy how much they invest and the amount of detail.

One of these rich Hifi fan even have built its own electrical power factory just to ensure the electricity is filter from all default and noises. He want only use vinyl.

Crazy budget more equipment and budget than the investment done in most of the studio doing recording and mastering.

… and then we put a lofi plugin onto our tracks to deliberately add simulated tape hiss, noise, warble and tape wow & flutter …

Lol! I just simply add the lofi sound because it has a nostalgic warm rounded sound for me. I don't use high-end equipment anyways outside of my iPad and Beats headphones.

Yikes! I guess all those times I opened a new vinyl LP in my youth, and stuck my nose to it for a good sniff (yeah I LOVE the smell of a new vinyl record!) wasn’t such a good idea!

Hell, I used to purposely break those glass thermometers to “play with” the mercury in my hand!

Heh, oh well, no wonder I’m dying.. and I thought it was those damned cigarettes. Might as well start smoking again because I’m not getting rid of my vinyl collection! (I’m partly kidding!)

  • That guy is gonna be PISSED when he hears an electric guitar for the first time

    Ha, true!

I guess there is a difference between an old record player or cassette deck making everything sound bad with faults compared to iOS music makers selectivly adding a certain amount (or type) of hiss or distortion or whatever.

Believe me mate, if I had the money, I would definitely hire a service to press some of my EPs to vinyl!

Definitely, there's a huge difference between selectively applied vinyl scratches and clicks and an album that unintentionally skips in a completely unmusical way. Unfortunately, what counts for 'musical' may be subjective - I remember returning vinyl in the 2000s, when I used to buy a lot, because I thought the record was damaged. But it was just the idm crowd adding in some vinyl popping noises etc. Although Warp Records accounted for 2% of UK vinyl sales at one point, I'll bet they also accounted for a fair few returns too 😂
