Harp Improv (Concert Harp pack from Pianoteq 8)

This is a music track that I improvised on an Xkey Air 37 MIDI keyboard connected via Bluetooth to a 12.9-inch iPad. The iPad was running the new Pianoteq 8 app with a modified Concert Harp Lyrical preset.

It's titled Harp Improv.

  • Lovely sounding performance… have you played around with those Spectrum Profile sliders yet?
Try pulling down the odd numbered sliders that are greater than 1 or pull up the odds. The impact on the tone is very profound.

I need to look up the Wermeister III tuning to see what it’s intended to solve for.

I was playing with the energy and getting this sitar like AfterTouch spectrum sweep. Decidedly un-piano like.

I passed one of my Pro Presets over to an iPad running the demo version and none of these Pro tweaks are there as I expected. It makes Profile tweaking a game for the small community of Pro level users. “Haves and Have Nots”.

How long have you had the product? Are you seeing any significant haps in the IOS port. I noticed that the Impulse File import feature is missing and contacted Modartt for an answer and have not received a reply. I hope they can add that because Impulse files are also sneak extra audio content into the experience of a long note like audio from a TV playing nearby. Very good for folks that like it mix music and found audio. I use Thafknar to make my IR files. I tested the feature on a Mac and was able to get a 30 second Impulse File to load than has a ton of TV audio.
I also have IR’s of vacuum cleaners and other machine noises that as steady state sound create a big change in a pianos tone. Anyway, I do have the Mac for those games at the same cost of entry.

At what version of PianoTeq did you start being a Pro customer?

  • Great to hear! Yes, @McD 's ideas for stretching out the voices sound like it would be right up your alley.

  • Nice piece, @DavidEnglish. Soothing harp sound. I think I like the non piano sounds even more than the piano sounds in PT8.

  • Nice sound, although some of it seems very hard/impossible to play on an actual harp.

That’s pretty cool that we can design music that very hard to play and no one has to practice for hours and we don’t have to beg musicians to play our ideas. All for the nominal price of a couple thousadn dollars in hardware and software. We even get to skip the need for an audience and just enjoy the results without critics.

  • This is great and a good performance! All played by hand?

If I might ask, how do you like the XKey? Any latency issues? I have an iRig keys pro but I’m on the hunt for a good/smaller Bluetooth midi controller and I see it mentioned a fair amount.

Sounded like all white keys to me. It's usually the chromatic notes that make things difficult for harpists.

  • @McD, I bought Pianoteq 7 Pro last year, when Mordartt was throwing in a free upgrade to Pianoteq 8 Pro. Didn't get into customizing it under recently.

@McD and @Stochastically, I'm just starting to try out the Spectrum Profile sliders. Amazing potential to adjust and extend the overtones.

@HotStrange, the Xkey keyboard is pretty good in terms of expression, though the keys are a bit clunky to play. It doesn't seem to have any latency problems beyond what you would expect with any Bluetooth connection.

The power went out for me for most of Sunday. That's why I was using the Xkey for this.

Since then, I've saved the performance as a MIDI file and brought it over to Bitwig Studio on my desktop. I'll be posting the result of that later today.

    Thanks!

  • Very different to your ‘usual’ creations but as always, beautiful and serene. Enjoyed it a lot 😊

  • Really nice David. I love simple solo instrument pieces. The harps in Geoshred are some of my faves among the instruments so far - among many.

  • Nice for a quiet Sunday love this ARP solo

  • Thanks, @GeoTony, @Gavinski, and @BerlinFx. Glad you like it.
