Post your iPad setup

I'm curious how you guys have your iPads setup for music production, do you have USB C docks and external hard drives / synths / interfaces / keyboards and whatnot connected to it?

thought it would be very interesting to see how everyone has their iPad setup and what gear they use, being new to iPad I'm still trying to understand / see what's possible lol

I bought a M1 iPad pro a month ago but wasn't using it much, but seeing FCP and Logic coming to it I definitely want to try learning to use it for music production now. I could imagine Kontakt being ported over soon and all the libraries being available, people plugging in external SSDs and running orchestral templates soon.

    I’m super hybrid 😂
    iPad Pro + MPC One + MacBook Pro + Maschine MK3 + Launchpad Pro MK3 + Hardware Synths + Percussion Instruments… I’ll take a pic soon

  • I keep everything lean and mean… Only a keyboard cover attached to the iPad Pro for text input and will occasionally connect a cable to desktop computer to use the iPad to record performance information. I try to avoid external keyboards, mics, mixers, whatever so I keep my signal chain extremely clean.

  • iPad mini 6, cheapo Sony headphones. One day I’ll get some decent cans…

    Here my setup

    IPad Air 4 ios 16.4

  • Most of the time working in the box: just the iPad, the $9 Apple dongle, and some headphones.

When recording guitar: a very small Scarlett Solo plugged straight into the iPad. Guitar and headphones then plug into the Scarlett.

When recording vocals: an SSL2 with a Shure SM7B, plugged into a cheap USB-C hub with a powerbank powering the interface, which helps to prevent battery drain on the iPad.

When using a MIDI keyboard: cheap USB-C hub, with the keyboard plugged into one slot, and the Apple headphone adapter into another (with a USB-C to USB-A adapter attached).

  • Osmose - Rc505mk2 loopstation - ipad

  • Just ordered an Arturia Minilab 3, and I have a Keystep Pro and a Korg Nanokontrol Studio. Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface and Audio Technica headphones. This all goes into a Thunderbolt dock that I can move between my M1 iPad Pro and my M2 Macbook Air. I'll be very interested to see if the Minilab can achieve the same level of integration with Logic on iPad (it relies on a controller "script" for Logic). My level of productivity does not justify any of this gear, BTW

  • It used to be OP-1 and iPad. Now it’s iPad and iRig keys pro until I get the OP-1 field.

    My setup today:)

  • As portable as I could get. Works both without keyboard and without iPad (that's why I choose MPK Mini Play). Fits into guitar bag pocket. Also optional accessories: iRig Acoustic Stage for guitars, Rocksmith Realtone Cable for mono synths and electric guitars.

    Hopefully 3 x ipad ( 9th gen )

I ask why do I need 3rd ipad.

I may have bought an ipad 10 just incase an ipad needs more cpu. Will test but theres a couple reviews saying its slower than older ipads.

The 9th gen are tank like but wont be able to buy again in future.

My bonkers setup. M1 IPad Pro with a usbc hub to a 7 port powered hub. The keyboards, Beatstep pro, Behringer umc404 audio interface, Midimix and another midi interface all plug into the powered hub. Midi interfaces go to the modular and the Ambika synth. Audio is captured and mixed in AUM which also routes MIDI. There is a Norns I add to the setup sometimes too to generate MIDI or audio. Everything synced via Ableton link or MIDI clock.

AUM is the glue that ties it all together. It’s a very flexible setup and total overkill for a noodler like me!

Check this thread out as well!

Below is my iPad setup: it’s an iPad Air 4 connected via an Apple USB C HDMI adapter to a 20000 mAh powerbank, and a small USB A hub. My Arturia Audiofuse 2 audio interface goes into the USB hub, as well as MIDI keyboards.

Totally mobile, totally open-ended. I can connect basically whatever I want through either USB A or audio straight in.

The DJ desk is from Gravity.

My DAW of choice is Roland Zenbeats.
