IRig HD 2 and iPad Pro Hub

I know this type of question comes up all the time, but the answers continue to be really confusing. I want to start using my iRig HD 2 with my iPad Pro with USB C. Currently using a Micro USB to USB A and a USB A to USB C dongle, and all I get is a blue light on the iRig but it does not seem to register any sounds from my guitar (even with gain cranked all the way up, the monitoring LED does not change color).

Do I just need some powered USB C hub? Is it just a power issue? IK Multimedia sells a cable just to connect the iRig to the iPad but I’d like to have a MIDI keyboard plugged in simultaneously. If all I need is power, I’d like to buy this: https://uniaccessories.com/products/usb-c-to-3-usb-a-pd-hub

Would that work?

  • Some devices need more power in to work...
Maybe you need to connect a charger to the USB-C PD port of the dongle to provide enough power to all the connected devices.

  • Ooops, thought you already had a dongle with a USB-C PD port...

  • Right, hoping that the hub I posted with the PD port will solve the issue?

  • The iRig HD 2 should be bus-powered, so it should work when you plug it straight into your iPad using the adapters you mentioned. My guess is that one of the adapters is the cause of the problem.

Having said that, the hub you're looking at should probably solve the problem. Just be aware that you will need a 65w power supply for that hub, since it will deliver power to the iPad and the peripherals.

  • Thanks guys. Turns out not all cables are created equal; I used a different cable and was able to get it working! This hub/cable/dongle world continues to be hit or miss…

Glad it's fixed. If you want to use a MIDI keyboard at the same time as your iRig the hub you are considering should work OK.

Alternatively you could get a cheaper non-PD hub and that should work too, and you can use a powerbank or an adapter to power the iRig and the keyboard (but not the iPad, which would require a higher wattage power source).

  • How would you connect the iRig/controller to the powerbank if they need to also be connected to a hub?

If the hub has a USB-A or USB-C power input you can plug a power bank into it for the peripherals:

  • Excellent, thanks a ton for your help!
