My live performance quest.

edited August 2014 in General App Discussion

I have always toyed with the idea of doing live performance with an ipad. It has been sprung within my grasp since joining the forum. However, I have so many questions.
1. What apps do I start with?
2. I have an iPad mini and when I've been looking at the ipad camera connection kits, I have seen a lot of comments saying it only works with cameras - is this true?
3. I have a midi keyboard already - what other hardware do I need?
4. Is it possible to keep the ipad constantly powered while playing?
5. In most of the live performances I've already seen - the click track has been playing - is there a way of making it so only i can hear it on headphones?
6. Do you guys actually get gigs?

There are a ton more questions I have and there's no doubt that your answers will arm me with even more questions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi. You probably can have a click track but you'll need an audio interface with multiple outs or midi out through which you can send the clock to the drummers metronome etc. CCK is pretty much the only way to connect music stuff to the ipad but other ways are slowly creeping in (bluetooth). You ask about the apps to start with and that will very much depend whether you want to work predominantly in midi or audio. Because midi side of things is still quite shaky on ios (I hope someone can prove me wrong) I personally chose audio with loopy as my main app. I mess with filters on the synths (mainly sunrizer due to low CPU/ram draw and wide palette of sounds albeit more vintage analogue) while playing but once captured I only modify them with fx such as: turnado, effectrix, livefx, wow. If you're planning to use vocals magellan synth can be used successfully as a vocal/acoustic fx processor. So my list would be:

    Audiobus

    Sunrizer

    Sugar bytes fx especially turnado

    Seekbeats for drums (ram intensive)

    Loopy hd

Samplr (not your usual mpc but syncs well with loopy and a very deep app)

This list is not exhaustive by any means so wait for other responses as there's tones of ways of doing this. Good luck

Edit: Impaktor is an amazing app for live use if you're into percussive stuff but you'll need an epad to trigger it.
