Atom 2 vs LK MIDI workflow inside of loopy pro.
Which of the 2 is better. Which one should I go with if I plan on making some patterns in both of them then record them into donuts.
Thanks!
Comments
I think they are both great
Haven’t really encountered any problems
I use atom 2 as I know it better
Different strokes for different folks
LK is a bit neater if you’ve got loads of au instruments hosted, as it’s just one midi source in the mixer. Atom 2 is nice and immediate though.
I currently use Drambo for this purpose which is working really well, but it’s all down to personal taste.
Thanks for the responses. Yeah I love how LK works it’s just that the UI is too small even on the newest iPhones.
I’ll check out drambo. Trying to setup a template and this is the last thing I need lol
@Knowledgeispower
Tell me about it
I have been changing work flows forever
I had great success with Xequence and AUM, but am trying to stick to loopy pro as my master, and still using AUM
Recently brought ‘sand’ and that’s quite fun
There always seems to need a workaround etc
Once the amazing loopy pro has midi loops perhaps that will be perfect
But with that other app dropping at the end of the month who knows what my work flow will be
As many have stated, if AUM had a time line things would be different, but AUM was never built for that, and what it does do, it does it amazingly match 1st world problems
Just looked at sand looks interesting. Is that your main sequencer right now?
I also looked into drambo, is there no MIDI export? My main goal with these apps is to export the MIDI.
I heard in drambo you have to make it a MIDI processor instead of au to export MIDI. But would that go against my workflow?
Just trying to route apps to the MIDI sequencer and record into donuts export MIDI if wanted, automation is a plus.
I use every thing
I got sand so I could concentrate on a couple of synths add effects and then save the midi, or record the audio
As I like to keep it separate from my AUM project
It works well, and means I don’t need to use atom 2 , might be a strange set up to some, but kinda works for me
We are so spoiled for options that I can never seem to settle
This is a hobbie for me, so I get side tracked very easily and can’t stick to a routine like some of the amazing people that visit here
Kids work and life also get in the way
Being diverse can lead to creativity so that’s good!
Yeah I have atom 2 and LK right now. Only thing that is annoying is I want at least like 8 atom 2 instances and I’m on my iPhone.
So it’s just like a spam of atoms on the bottom and then my apps, I can’t see everything to which atom is which unless I count. Could make a template to open them in loopy but for certain loopy pro custom screen I wouldn’t have room for that option.
Lk is icons very small on iPhone 14 pro max. If it was bigger I would try to see my work flows compared but I do get annoyed how I have to focus Precisely to hit a button on the go.
So I haven’t looked at drambo MIDI export(heard there’s none) maybe a work around? But drambo looks really good.
Sand looks great but looks limited in the piano roll.
Anyone know how to do drambo MIDI export in the terms of how I’m setting up my loopy pro? All my synths/instruments going into drambo for MIDI patterns(for export) and more. I can record from drambo into loopy donuts.
Thanks in advance
Yeah
Just keep asking questions
The people here are extremely knowledgeable and helpful
Just out of interest, why do you want to export the midi?
There is no midi file import or export with Drambo. But other than that it's an excellent midi looper for Loopy Pro. The best alternative IMO. If you want to export midi then you could add the free Midi Tape Recorder and record Drambo's midi output to that.
As an added bonus, you can also use Drambo as an automation generator / recorder for Loopy Pro, since it currently doesn't have this ability.
No, you don't need to do that. But first let's clarify what you mean by "export". If you mean, "send live midi out," that's one thing. I you mean "export midi to a midi file," then Drambo can't do that. However as mentioned above, you can record it's output into something else that can export a midi file.
To get live midi output from Drambo to drive other synths, it has to be loaded as a midi input. However, you don't have to use the pure midi FX version, and you can use the same instance as an audio input, giving you the best of both worlds.
What I do is first add Drambo as an audio source, whether I plan to use it that way or not. Then I add a midi source and select the existing instance, not a new one. Now I can have audio and midi out from the same instance.
After that, it's just a matter of setting tracks to output midi. I like to use the midi output module for this because it's immediately visible when looking at a track and it's easy to set the output channel. Output channels are important when using Drambo for midi in Loopy Pro. By default plugins listen on every channel, so you need to set an output channel in Drambo an select a specific input channel in your synths, or Drambo will play all of them.
Whew. All this sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is in practice. Once you get the basics of midi output from Drambo in Loopy, it becomes second nature. And the nice thing about it is you can still use Drambo's own sound generators when it makes sense - all in the same project.
Once you have a good working setup, clear all the loops and Drambo sequences and save a Loopy Pro template. Instant setup whenever you need it.
You can setup a single atom instance to run all of your synths on separate channels as well, but yea the UI gets real messy on a phone. LK or Drambo would be better for that but right now I’ve just been committing more stuff to audio and using a single control and muting and unmuting auv3s as I need to, been working pretty nice and saving on resources, I have follow actions that mute everything after it records to audio.
So I was messing with drambo set up everything worked out fine then realized I can’t change time signatures in real time to add triplets to a normal 4/4 grid?
I can do this in lk as shown below. Can I do this in drambo?
I use the piano roll for those is kinda mandatory for my workflow.
4/4 grid size but with triplets etc

This is also red and I don’t know how to change it I seen someone with a 7 after the red but I can’t seem to change it.
I don’t know if this still fixes the real time different signatures problem.
If you want triplets and dotted grids plus more flexible pattern lengths then please request it. If enough people ask the developer for this feature, it will be added for sure.
I've requested it already.
Is Drambo's midi recording always quantized?
You can disable it anytime in the metronome/bpm menu on top.
Unquantized steps will be shown on the "next best step" in the step sequencer view.
I’m going with drambo for the time being until midi donuts are here.
LK is way to clunky and iPhone also it’s annoying to start recording a pattern compared to drambo. You have to go through 2 screens to start a new pattern on LK if u were using midi drums.
Click on pattern on matrix page then go midi drums and record without seeing anything besides the time stamps? It’s not very intuitive unless I’m doing it wrong.
Drambo is much faster and workflow is better on iPhone. I can just click on any of the tracks and just click record and start and I’m recording into my pattern, unlike LK. Which is a pain if I want to use their midi drums, and if I do use midi drums then I can’t use loopy pro stock keyboard, kind of a big hassle.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone
Is there a good tutorial walking through the use of Drambo to record/playback midi clips?
There's nothing different about working with Midi in Drambo than with anything else. The only difference is you send the midi out rather than to an internal module. You can set up the midi output in the track settings or you can just add a midi out module. I prefer the midi out module because it's more visible and quicker to get to than the track settings.
Oh, and the track mute style should be changed from audio to midi.
Just bought Atom 2 but it isn’t showing up in any of my auv hosts. So far I’ve tried Loopy Pro (my go to), Garage Band and AUM. Any pointers, I’m stumped? I’m using an iPad Air 5th gen.
Try rebooting. Sometimes new AUv3 don't show up. Also, make sure you are adding as a MIDI element.
Perfect, thanks! Human error. Wasn’t adding as a midi element.
