Newbie and why I’m here
Hello all! Nice to be here finally. I’ve always browsed the forum but I’ve finally joined the party.
About 6-7 years ago I got bit by the Eurorack modular bug. Even before that I had a bad case of gear lust, hell I’ve tried every groove box/synth that has come out over the past 20 years. Some I would try for a month and then send back others I would keep for a year and then sell off.
To make a long story short I decided to retire early and move down to Mexico.
I’ve got rid of most of my gear but I kept a 208hp Eurorack, Digitakt, Digitone, Op-1 Field and TE- TX-6 mixer and now a iPad mini.
I feel like I could sell everything and just keep my Op-1 and the mixer along with my iPad mini.
It’s crazy what you can do with a iPad these days. I never thought a iPad could be really used as a musical piece of gear but wow was I wrong. There are amazing effects and synths, hell even mixers and utility plugins.
With AUM it’s pretty much like having a modular synth in your pocket with the ability to save patches.
My question is this. Will the mini be big enough? I still have three weeks to decide if I want the air instead. My eyes aren’t great and having a bigger screen May be better.
Have any of you purchased a mini and then decided it was too small and went with a bigger sized iPad? Just curious. I must say i do love the portability of the mini!

Sell the OP and get a 12.9”. Bigger screen is always better. If you play touchscreen instruments it’s almost mandatory. OP does nothing you can’t do on iOS.
I would think the 11" would be the minimum really, but 12.9 is better IMO. Unless you really need portability I would avoid the Mini.
I have the mini 6 and haven't met a problem with size yet. I prefer it to my old 10.2 iPad as it seems like a cool handy gadget that I can take anywhere. full disclosure: I don't use a DAW, I have a knock-off apple pencil copy and I use reading glasses anyway.
I personally can't stand less than 12.9 inch. And yes smaller will definitely be harder on your eyes if you do a lot of screen time. Any ophthalmologist will tell you that bigger screens are better when it comes to vision problems, as the eye has more room to roam, moves more, blinks more, works harder in a good way.
Welcome to the Forum!
I have an iPad mini 5. Once in a while there will be an app where the font or controls are small and a bigger screen might help. I wear reading glasses almost 24/7 these days.
I've never owned a full size iPad so maybe I don't know what I'm missing but if I were buying an iPad today I would try to get the most bang for my buck in terms of specs / future support regardless of size. I like the portability of the mini and it's served me well for the past couple of years.
I was thinking about selling the op-1 cause the iPad can clearly do a million more things but at the same time there are days when I just want to fire up the op and play around with it. Do I really need it? No! It is fun to have though. Haha
Yeah a bigger screen does seems to make more sense now that logic is coming out.
I also need reading glasses and the apple pen seems like a win win.
What I may do is purchase the air and use them back to back just to see which one suits me more.
Welcome!
My two cents is don't sell the OP-1f, it's a completely different experience than making music on an iPad, and the two go well together. I'd get a bigger iPad, I had a mini but quickly flipped it for an 11" pro. The mini was cramped for me. Also, with Logic for iPad on the horizon, I'd think a mini might be frustrating. I really enjoy the Apple pencil as well.
Welcome to the forum. Imo the 11” is the minimum I want to work with but I’ll be upgrading to the 12.9” Pro this summer. I agree with exactly what you said. My setup for the last couple years was just an op-1 and an iPad. I sold my op-1 to try the MPC one and didn’t like it at all. Then the Field was announced. So I sold the Akai and am now saving up for the Field. That and my iPad is all I’ve ever need.
I run a bunch of different DAWs just fine on my 10.9 inch iPad Air (4g 2020).
Even with the imminent arrival of the 'wonder DAW' I reckon it'll be easily sufficient.
If you can afford a 12.9 inch Pro model, then even the 2021 'vintage' model still has got the power.
Welcome to the pit. Good problems to have. Go big and get as much memory as you can manage. Write music, play music, record music. Look around. Realize you're one of the luckiest men alive.
Thx all. I’ve decided to get ship the mini back and go with the air model. I love the portability of the mini, but I’m worried because of my older age (bad eyes) it will be too small.
You’ll love op-1 field. I’m excited to see what they come up with over the next years on the updates.
I already love it and I don’t even own it yet 🤣 sadly it’ll be months before I’m able to afford but I’m looking forward to it.
