Hiromi's command of the instrument is unparalleled. Her sense of dynamics, legato/staccato, note definition, rhythm and flow... they are exceptional. I remember playing some of her stuff for some jazzer friends back in California, and they remarked that they didn't feel an emotional connection to her playing. Honestly, I don't know how you could NOT have an emotional connection to her playing. She's mindblowing.
And then, on top of all that, her band is Anthony Jackson & Simon Phillips who are both monsters in their own right. Oh yeah, that's when she's not playing duets with Chick Corea or in another band with Stanley Clarke & Lenny White.
I've got all her albums. She's simply astounding.
When improvising I feel like I should have those same expressions.
