Your first EVER music app

It took me forever to realise I had a music studio on my iPad. Although I had used iPads for work since 2011 it took an eye operation ( required a bigger screen to read) then lockdown 2020 for me to realise the power contained in my iPad Air 3. I was hooked and started my journey as an iPad only hobby musician. It helped me through my eye ops and lockdown tbh. Looking back though I had ‘dabbled’ in April 2009 with the app ishred. Must have been impressing 😂😂 people with my rock guitar skills?…maybe… dunno. What was your first foray into this new world? Feel free to hint at anything you think I should have bought?

  • I bought an iPad 2 in 2012 to read comic books on, and dabbled a bit with Garageband a bit that year. Then in 2013 I was working away from home for 8 months and had some spare time in the evenings so I downloaded Animoog.

I was a little apprehensive downloading the synth, because I felt there might be a rabbit hole right there. I found this forum shortly after, and here I am a decade later, at the bottom of a very deep rabbit hole indeed. 🕳

  • Animoog was available for $1 when it first came out, that persuaded me to buy my first iPad - it was always something I was interested in, but Animoog was the push I needed!

  • My first was Gadget - I bought an Air2 just to get me started on it. I was completely seduced by that online ad with all the Gadgets arranged in a studio in that 3D mock up.

  • I went to IPad in 2012 to read email and use it for social media not at all for music.
What was the first app I have ? It was in 2018 , it was a free app with IAP (not sure) = Beat Maker Go

  • Korg Gadget was the reason I bought my first iPad in 2017

  • Akai Synthstation in 2011, mindblowed when realizing I could have synthesizers on my iPad. No turning back since, now the iPad is my center of music production.

    +1

And deep it is, an abyss…

  • Thumbjam on iPod.

  • My first app was some tc helicon looper that I actually used to do some singing / chanting, harmonising with myself. I was blown away but looking back now it was primitive and had a horribly dated interface. After that I bought a few things - voice synth, Loopy Pro, some other synth, eventually Audiobus. My first serious investment was Korg Module, including one of the paid Pianos, but mostly Roli Noise, with most of the IAPs, including all the Swam ones, which was a purchase I massively regretted as they were locked inside the standalone app, and that standalone app is the biggest piece of garbage ever. At that time I really didn't understand properly what auv3 or IAA were. Once I did learn what auv3s were and bought aum I spent a ton of money in a relatively short space of time - especially after the pandemic hit. It was pure addiction + curiosity + lack of ability to demo things + Doug seemingly praising every app he demoed to high heaven 😉.

This is why I caution people to be a lot more careful with their spending and try to learn what they have before buying more. Spend a lot more time researching the scene before you start buying lots of stuff.

Not easy at all, I know, and I am still very addicted to getting new toys on iOS even if I rarely have to buy them any more. I do splurge occasionally and recently got Pianoteq Studio, albeit pretty heavily discounted.

And I certainly don't have the will or the time to master most or even half of the apps I get. As I've said elsewhere, I could throw the vast majority away and wouldn't really miss them, especially as there are always new things to be distracted by.

  • Paklsound1 August 23 2008, then a few other missing in action ones, until I got @mifki SoundGrid in May the following year which is the first one I got that still exists…

  • First ever on iOS? Or any platform?

  • First music app, first app period. Was a main driver for picking up an iPhone to begin with!

  • Hmmm I’m honestly not sure. Figure maybe? Besides GarageBand obviously. I had Thumbjam pretty early on. Gadget was the app that really got me into iOS in 2015/16 though.

  • TonePad was the first music related app I got, after that is started to go downhill fast towards app-o-holism.

Today I've got a better grip on where I spend my cash :sunglasses:
No more insta-buys without proper evaluation and no more 'support buying' apps just because...

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Music Studio ❤️ 😊

I started the thread with iOS in mind but only because of my personal experience so please fire away make me jealous! 🤜🤛

  • I’m fairly new to the game

  • Nanostudio 1. The original reason I purchased an iPod Touch (either 3 or 4) in 2011 was to betatest FLSM (this was back when FLSM was still based on Xewton's software architecture), lol, but the very first app I ever purchased was Nanostudio 1. 🙂 Long before Gadget was ever released.

  • @Samu and @ gavinski there is a lot of wisdom in your words. I have WASTED so much money in a short space of time chasing the holy grail of music making only to find I just need to stick with what I’ve got, learn it properly…all the things you know. I posted an albums worth then took it down it was soooo shit. That set me off looking to improve my “gear” rather than improve my songs and technique. And here I am set to go again with my new toy Logic. How long can I stay on the wagon? How long before I retreat into the comforting arms of Cubasis which drives me MAD on occasions btw but is the nearest I got? I promise myself no more but…. I was exactly the same with hardwear back in the day btw but that had some resale value!

  • TechnoBox. I couldn't imagine at that time that music on iOS will evolve the way it did

Back then I could only dream of plugins coming to iPad. Then Gadget showed us it was possible in a way by having their own apps be hostable within Gadget. Then along came Blamsoft and Poison-202.

  • I think it was Nanostudio...

Still have Bebot! Forgot all about the 8bit one. Unfortunately doesn’t seem to work anymore last I tried so I deleted it. It was great though.

I still got Bebot 2009! It still blurbs and farts like an old trooper on my iPad. Try it again!
