iPad Mic issue…strange
Hi all,
I have a peculiar issue with my IPad Mini 5 microphone. On certain apps e.g.Cubasis,Voice Memos the sound is very muffled with very loud background hiss.I have cleaned the mic thoroughly but no improvement.Strangely when I record video on the iPad Camera app all is fine.So..the mic clearly works on some apps but not so well on audio apps.It almost sounds like I’ve put serious compression on input when I haven’t.Is it possible some audio apps “seize up” in the background and cant be unlocked or reset? It’s a strange one and I’ve deleted and reinstalled the audio apps but still the extreme hiss and low recording level.
Any help would be much, appreciated, many thanks!

All The iPads have multiple microphones (at least 3) so make sure you clean all three.
One is usually at the bottom, one the back and one near the side buttons (small holes).
Also make sure measurement mode, high quality mode (different names in different apps) is NOT enabled.
In apps such as AUM you can in the settings select which microphone to use.
This might help you track down which of them needs cleaning.
Thanks for the reply,appreciated.
I checked earlier online and apparently the 5th Gen IPad Mini only has one microphone. This of course may be wrong but multiple sites suggested this to be the case.I don’t use measurement mode so doubt it’s that.Do iPads split the audio input signal between audio and camera into different channels?I’ve cleaned the only mic I can see with isopropyl alcohol and done a full reset of the iPad.Hmmmmm..strange.
Again, thank you for any and all help.
Ok..looks like there are 2 mic holes contrary to some info on the web.I’ll try cleaning the second one and hopefully this will resolve the issue.
Apologies for the confusion and thank you again for the help Samu, much appreciated
On this page Apple lists dual microphones for the 5th Gen iPad mini.

Microphones
Dual microphones for calls, video recording, and audio recording
Let's see if we can find something that shows where both are.
(ie. idea is to 'tap around the device' while recording to see where the level is the highest).
Microphone on iPad Mini (5th generation)
The iPad Mini released in 2019 has two microphones. One is located at the top, next to the headphone jack, while the other is located at the back near the camera. The back microphone is for noise cancellation and better audio quality during video recording.
Update!
Fixed! Yes a few sites online wrongly claimed there was only one mic.
Located the second one, despite my failing eyesight and all is well again after a clean out.
Thank you again Samu, really appreciate your help
