I subscribe to that mindset as well, …

    No subscriptions!

Without subscriptions I would not have any internet connection at all :sunglasses:

  • I paid for Ableton Suite and still don’t get as much done as I would like. I doubt that would be different if the price were doubled, or if it was cut by half for that matter.

I get the argument that spending more money could encourage one to spend more time on learning the tool since they’re bought in, but at least in my case price has proven not to be a driving factor.

Distraction, now that’s my driving factor. B)

As am amateur - which almost everyone here is, with most or many having no ambitions to make a career from music, you don't have to finish tracks as long as you are enjoying the process. That could mean either immediate pleasure, or a less tangible sense of meaning, making progress etc etc.

I think the motivation for creating art is usually completely separate from wanting to make money - or at least it should be.

Yep. Music is now a hobby, so pretty much zero income vs lots of expenditure. But I couldn’t stop if I wanted to. It’s an itch that must be scratched.

My other creative obsession is art. I haven’t had a chance for over a month to do any painting, and I almost feel mentally and physically less of…me… without my fix. I’m desperately rushing through my day job workload so I can get the paints back out again.

Delivered a couple of paintings to an exhibition yesterday, and was a bit startled to see one of them featured on a big advertising hoarding outside the gallery. I sell the occasional painting but it’s not why I do it - though selling these two would help go towards buying a bigger iPad!

It’s great to hear about people’s actual stories on this forum. I’m retired from work now but still struggling to start and end my music. But music IS my main outlet to creativity. For me it’s all about creativity. Anyone who does any kind of creative craft knows that although it can feel like work the actual outcome seems to come from somewhere else. I too love painting. This I don’t do as much anymore because I try to dedicate free time to music making (I would never be good enough to have a painting sold) my class which I don’t attend anymore did used to put on exhibitions. They are a great way to get your output seen. 🤜🤛

I find resources such as BandCamp very useful for helping to focus my musical outpourings. It's not about selling tracks for me, though that's nice when it happens, obviously, but providing a destination for the finished items. I have collections of albums under different 'bands', which provide a nice way to house the varying styles I pump out, and also inspire me to create more.

I've been thinking of a new band project this morning - and already conjuring up names, album titles, what the music will sound like, cover artwork etc., which is all part of the fun for me. But having that 'destination' for it, definitely spurs me on to create a finished collection of music.

  • i started to practice more, as i got a hanika masterclass.
i play more with it, if its a great piece of tool.

Yes again I get this. I use SoundCloud and I have had some unbelievable encouragement and support from this community and I’m only a year in. Likewise I have used Distrokid to put some stuff onto streaming. In a year I only got half my outlay back in royalties 😂😂 but that was never the point it was the “destination “ point you have raised. I think the first time Pandora accepted one of my tracks was quite a compliment to my improved mastering skills😂😂 teacher said B+ for effort!

  • The OP theory will be put to the test with Xinematix.

Now for me doing music is mainly a therapeutic way to feel better. I focus on what is my feeling to express into music. I put on Soundcloud not the best tracks I did just what remenber a personal matter.

Since 2018 I don’t work anymore because of health problems, I have nearly 100 tracks at the stage of be polish and mastered a bit for Soundcloud . And 40 tracks more on the go. Yes I know I can make a EP with that but it is not my aim at all. If 100 guys heard my music I am happy with that.

I discover with the support of pro musicians how it was exciting to do a jam live , no stress only joy. Next time I will be doing one in front of 10 000 people this summer during 15 minutes at a festival, the only amateur musician not paid for that, it is my birthday gift 🎁 that my pro friends offer me a guest appearance in a festival. My 15 minutes of great joy. It is also a challenge in some way even technical issue to solve.

Nice story, have lot of fun THIS day!!!! Next times you will take money and will buy new gear or apps or feel even better making music!! 🫶🏻😉
