Tim Hecker style distortion

I know I’m late to the party but I really love Tim Heckler’s distorted wall of sound.
Ambient has been main focus for production over the past 6-7 years and even though I had racks and racks of Eurorack stuff I had never even thought of purchasing a distortion module.
Now that I’m using an iPad for most of my effects I guess it makes good sense to pick up a distortion AU.
I’m assuming the best would be Saturn 2 but before I purchase it I’d like to hear if you guys have any sort of input.

Or maybe I should buy the new Elektron box instead! 🤪

  • Audio damage made grind free recently, maybe worth a try.

    Nice! I’ll check that out

  • K-Devices Shaper (either the original or version 2) are great for extremely hardcore digital distortion, as is Soundsaw by Igor Vasiliev.

Cheers. I ended up buying Shaper 2! Love it.

  • Shaper and Soundsaw are definitely amazing. I really like Nembrini’s distortion apps and they have a couple of free ones. Their LoFi app is great for this too.

BYOD from Chow is free and absolutely fantastic. Bit Maestro is good. I haven’t tried the Eventide one but I’ve heard it’s really great too. And lastly Beef from Caelum Audio. 11/10 app.

I would check out BYOD before spending money on anything else. It is pretty deep.

  • +10 for BYOD!

Saturn 2 is definitely expensive, but the modeling is the best I've heard on iOS. Its good enough to replace analog distortions for most applications in my various setups, and killed any urge I had to buy an Analog Heat again. Its one of my top used plugins.

I'd also recommend Unfiltered Audio's lo-fi-af. It does some really awesome replications of various digital media and is a great plugin for audio degredation. These two get heavy use with my jams.

You should definitely check out BYOD also, especially if money is tight.

If you already have Drambo, I'd check out the distortion options in there and the various patches on patchstorage. Folks have done a lot of awesome things with the modules.

Lastly, if you have miRack there are a number of distortion options built into that which can take you far.

Edit: if you are using hardware still, the Analog Drive is a nice cheapish option for various distortions. It really shines if you can blend dry signal with the distortion output; also great for running feedback through ;). I like the tone more than the Analog Heat, and use that alongside my Analog Four and iPad for distorted feedback when I want to get really blown out.

Saturn 2 looks amazing and I’m eventually going to get it. For now I need to learn all these different sequencers and loopers I’ve purchased…

  • I love Grind, but it's a special situation app. Saturn works on every channel of every piece. It's also my go-to guitar amp on ios.

Grind is great but I have had problems with it in both Auria and Cubasis. Hopefully is solved by now.

  • Btw. In my opinion BYOD is of an equal quality to paid apps. It is first-rate.

Saturn is #1 on my to buy list. It seems amazing.

K Devices Magma has one of the best distortions to use in an ambient context. When you combine this with Tape 2, Chow Tape, or unfiltered audio Needepoint or some lofi warbley stuff it will take you places (free: Baby audio drift)
Totally forgot nembrini audio lofi clipper. Absolutely epic
