AB Forum Cover-Version Thread.

Thought it might be an idea to start a thread for members to post cover-versions of tracks. Perhaps you’d like to pay tribute to artists or specific tracks that have influenced you, or even songs that have just brought joy. Perhaps inspiration has run dry for new original tracks? Covering some tracks can not only keep people producing, but in the process perhaps offering some learning and fresh inspiration.

Rather than a monthly challenge, thought it'd just be nice for it to be an open and ongoing drop-in spot.

Not too many rules; just some guidelines:

  • Try to comment on others' tracks. Keep any critiques constructive. Members can opt-out of receiving critiques/reviews should they wish.

  • Tracks can be made on iOS, desktop, hardware tech, acoustic instruments, vocal-only, or any combination desired.

  • Tracks can be exact, note-for-note copies, loose interpretations or any combination. Of course, instrumentals from normally-sung tracks are welcome.

  • Please try to provide a link to the original track, live version or favourite performance of the original track via Youtube etc.

  • While not obligatory, members are welcome to share anything notable about the tracks they've covered, and why they're important. Of course, tracks needn’t have any special significance.

  • Again, not obligatory. But perhaps share which DAW, Apps, instruments and FX etc. were used.

  • I guess the only rule would be to not post anything to the thread that was created before that start date of the thread. I've started similar threads elsewhere, and within a couple of days pages and pages had been filled with past works. Got unruly pretty quickly ;)

Looking forward to hearing others' tracks :)

Oh, nice! Looking forward to it.

I have two ideas from a while ago. One of them, I got as far as working out the arragement and choosing some sounds. The other I managed to get down an initial loop for part of a verse Think i might resurrect either or both of those, but they might take a while to complete.

And yeah...Covers are a great way to learn, improve production chops etc.

  • Having shared my opinion, here and elsewhere, that Logic is all one needs to make really good sounding music, I'm going to try to put my money were my mouth is. So, my own little twist on this will be that each track I submit to this thread will be Logic-only. All instrument and FX, (To include re-sampling of Logic-sourced material) can be used in sound-design, and only Logic stock plugins can be used for mixing and mastering.

Worth a little caveat that if LPiOS turns out to be a hot mess of bugs and/or missing features, I can re-think my approach ;)

Very true. That’s how I originally taught myself guitar, with tabs, and one of the ways I still learn music and instruments today.

  • Looks like I'm going to have to back out of my plan to use only Logic for sounds. It turns out that the iOS version is missing about 90% of the sounds I expected it to have :) However, it does come with pretty much all the FX (Creative, Mixing & Utility), so I see no reason not stick to stock plugins for mixing etc.

Good for the thread, I was afraid it would turn into even another LP topic. Let’s focus on the covers themselves, and creative feedback regarding them.

(Cover coming soon, and it will NOT be created, mixed or mastered anywhere near LP😁. Reason for me posting this is to put some pressure on myself to finalize it…)

  • I hope it was clear that that was to be my own little thing. Didn't envision starting a trend or nuffink. Also, hadn't really considered when starting the thread just how much of a stir would be caused by the release of 'that which shall not be named'. I guess it has got a little bit out-of-hand.

I've pretty much done a 180 on the idea anyway. It's not that it can't be done, or that it can't be done well. But now that I finally have an iOS DAW that I'm well-acquainted with, from day one, and which will provide a nice backdrop for me to use all these instruments and FX, it very much seems like the wrong time to become a one-app man. Not going to deliberately compound what seems until now to have been a total waste of money, with a new-found DAW-manogamy.

Having said that, I will likely do one submission with the original plan, if for no other reason than proof-of-concept.

Anyway, I don't want to lose the only person who's been interested by the idea ;) It's a shame i didn't pass the thread idea on to someone (Anyone) else. Would be much more likely to get some interest/traction.

Never mind...It is what it is 👍🏼

Hey man, I think you took this in a way that was not intended. There is is nothing wrong with Logic Pro as such, and I am fully aware of its impact on iOS although I won’t subscribe and use it. It is just the amount of Logic around right now that made me worried it would derail a fresh thread. To each their own, and covers are covers regardless of the tools.

Stick to your plan, and I’ll stick to mine and let’s share what we come up with!

    We ok?😎

I don't think I took it in a way other than intended, so nothing to worry about there.

At the point this thread was started, the terrain was very different. Things have clearly blown up since then. And I think your point to bring focus back to the music, rather than the tools (Whichever they may be) was spot-on. Either way, I didn't take your comments to be anti-Logic.

As for plans? I definitely have plans for two tracks, currently. I started one a long time ago, but only got a couple of bars deep (A solid couple of bars, though). That track will be a bit more difficult to nail down. The other ideas is simpler, but I really want to make it quite special. And whichever tools feel right to achieve those ends, will be the ones I use.

    So yeah... we ok

Looking forward to hearing what you come up with :)

  • I like the cover thread idea, and the idea of keeping it post thread topic.

I have one I’ve been working on recently. Might share it here when it’s done.

  • Working on something too!

  • A raw acoustic performance captured with a single mic (Shure SM7B), with some compression and reverb. I got Logic Pro to analyse the tempo so I could add a Drummer track with some soft brushes behind the live take.

The song is a cover of Under The Milky Way by The Church, probably my favourite song from the eighties.

Here's my interpretation of 'Warm Leatherette' by The Normal

Recorded entirely in Koala Sampler on iPhone

I heard this on BBC Radio 6 Music for the first time couple of years ago and it has stuck with me ever since. I love the Grace Jones version.

  • I’m not very happy with my singing here but this vídeo took me a lot of time to make it, so I’m 50/50 proud of it 😊
All iPad…Edited in Lumafusion with none external app or effects
Mixed in Cubasis with sounds from Pure Synth Platinium and for the guitar tones I used Rhino.

And this the original video by Paul McCartney

    Nice thread!.
Here’s my version of the amazing “The Rat” by the band “The Walkmen”. That song is just killer. It’s a live performance using Loopy pro. I’m triggering the drums on the Digitakt, fx and stuff using a midi foot pedalboard.

    Here’s the original. Doesn’t get old 🙌

I actually prefer your version to the original, your voice is much nicer and your beat has a decent groove.

Considering this is a live performance you've done a great job with the dynamics, there are some nice changes in this version and I really like the low-key vibe at the start (and the guitar tone is great).

I didn't really take to the vocoded section - but top marks for the Beebot animation 😆 But otherwise it was all good.

  • Nice thread.
I had an almost 1:1 cover of Prodigy's Voodoo People done in Beatmaker 2. Unfortunately, that project got lost
    Time to try something new

I've recorded a more polished multi-tracked version of Under The Milky Way, it's a lot better than my scrappy-sounding live recording :)

(edit): I made a quick video for this with Wizibel:

And for those who might not know the original:

Absolutely agreed! I’m not talented to create my own stuff so making covers was what make me want to learn to play guitar and piano.

@tahiche great cover 👏👏 I didn’t know about this song and I like it and enjoyed your cover

Thanks for listening :) I guess the first version is more of a raw performance, but the trouble with playing guitar and singing into a single mic is that it's much harder to get nuance in the vocal, because the voice has to be louder than the guitar.

In the multitrack version I could sing more quietly and concentrate more fully on the vocal. Some singers are probably better suited to loud singing, I think I sing better at lower volumes and closer to the mic.

I'm not much of a performer really, there are many many people who sing and play guitar better than I do, so I definitely find it easier if I'm doing just one of those things at a time, rather than singing and playing simultaneously.

I would love to have listened to that. There’s a guy that did yt videos of recreating prodigy songs. The nirvana sample at the beginning of voodoo people took me aback, like how could I not have recognized it.
Did yours come with a nirvana sample :) ?

Yup! In fact, I was inspired by that video. Which by the way is done by Jim Pavloff, the dev that made Poison 202, GR-16 and Pure Acid. Too bad my backup was in an external hard drive that was stolen  lessons learned. Now all backups should be mirrored online

Wow… I haven’t heard this in over thirty years! A college radio station that played ‘alternative’ music had this in their regular lineup. I would listen on my way to work and always cranked it up. Nine Inch Nails did a great cover of this, too. Thanks for posting!
