Ableton-like MIDI capture on iPad?

Is there any iPad app that can do retrospective midi capture, just like Ableton’s Capture MIDI? I know Loopy Pro does this for audio, but for MIDI?

Comments

  • Have a look at Ableton Note, the implementation is a bit different from the desktop version, and the app is still young (limited length, no pitch bend and modwheel so far). But it is a retrospective midi looper . :)

  • Note is cool, but it only captures what you play in the app. That's fine if you want to use the built-in instruments, but I want it to capture any midi I play on any instrument.

  • Uhmmm Maybe someone did a mozaic or streambyter script?
I'm not sure how this retrospective recording works actually

@mistercharlie mmm I'm not a logic user but I think it had capture way before Ableton did. So, I assume from next week you can have capture via Logic pro subscription.

  • @mistercharlie Nimble looper as a IAP inside Steambyter does retrospective midi capture. If you add in a midi viewer like Atom 2 or similar you can see what notes are where.

    Good point!

    Checking now.

Note has accepted midi input for a while now.

I wish Note done midi out and AU instrument support. I love the way it inputs notes and you can see exactly what’s going in and the automation lines. If a dev made a AU midi app with the same style note input and display I bet it would be well popular as a retrospective midi key input device.

Midi out would be very useful, for example for sending midi to atom2 for easier editing.

What I mean is, it can’t send midi back out again after capturing it. I worded it very badly.

One thing I find intriguing with Note is that under the hood have the same instruments running as on desktop, which means they were able to port a good chunk of their code to iOS. So I'm hopeful they will keep brining more of it over.

I guess I'd just use MIDI Tape Recorder, written by our fellow member @GeertBevin, for that.
It's a beautiful little AUv3 MIDI plugin and can record permanently if you route your MIDI to both the recorder and your instrument.

  • @rs2000 I tried that one and it works great. It should tide me over until next Tuesday anyway!

    Yes, Logic Pro has it!
It’s called Capture Recording and you can enable the button in Customize Control Bar:

  • Already found it!

One other thing that I would wish for on iPad Logic is that neat new audio capture feature on the Mac version, that can grab an idea independently of the transport or current bpm.

  • Logic Pro’s “capture recording” is just great, but can it set the project tempo?

In Ableton, if you use Capture MIDI, it will use that newly-created clip to set the global tempo. I can’t find a way to do this on Logic Pro for iPad? Is it even possible?

The reason I want this is that often I improvise, and then when I hear something I like, I capture it (in Ableton), and off I go. It’s a way of making the machine follow the musician, instead of having to decide a tempo before you touch a key. I’d like to be able to do it on the iPad, if possible.
