RIP Smiths bassist Andy Rourke
Just announced on R4. Pancreatic cancer, age 59.

Gah 59?! That’s horrible. Rip
Jeez that’s sad, I walked round the back of Strangeways thinking about the Smiths just yesterday afternoon, so I’ve had his basslines rumbling round my head ever since…
Oh man, too young indeed.
OMG, what a shock. He wrote some amazing bass lines in the Smiths, for which he should have been given more credit.
The songwriter of this song is not Andy Rourke (according to Wikipedia). So his fans may be offended about me posting this song video here.
In similar cases, some time ago, when Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away, YMO song "Rydeen" was featured in some media. (I don't think Ryuichi Sakamoto’s fans were angry in that case, I think they just sighed.)
But I like Andy Rourke's bass playing on this song so much. So his fans, please forgive me.
(EDITED)
Perhaps because my brain was stimulated, suddenly I’ve realized "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine" (by The Killers) is under the influence of this song. (Too late.)
Rip
So true about his basslines; the Smiths' secret weapon undoubtedly.
RIP Andy ❤️
This bass line was a huge influence on a teenage me:
So many great ones, he really was an underrated member of that band. I can't believe he settled for £80k when Mike Joyce got a million quid. Morrissey and Marr should really have recognised Andy's contribution to the songs more fairly.
Another fave, great song of course, but also great bass playing:
Rest In Peace
Gone way too soon. I met him years ago at a DJ gig he played. I wrote about it a few months ago on my Substack — https://jeremywillets.substack.com/p/corduroy.
I had no idea he'd be gone this soon.
Life but a mere blink, gone too soon, God speed Andy.
I found the photo I have of him and I. October 16th, 2005 (my 25th birthday) at the B-side Liquor Lounge in Cleveland Heights, Ohio:
