Some developers do. Loopy Pro has a 7 day free demo period. Logic Pro will have a 30 day free demo period.

It's just not something that most developers have bothered with.

[edit] oh. did you specifically mean using TestFlight? I was referring to apps that do it in the App Store version, not using TestFlight.

  • yep, the apps in the appstore.

  • I think the good ones would sell more, the bad ones would sell less, so I am totally in favour of this. Of course it is more complicated than that, but regardless, everyone should have the right to demo apps before buying.Oterwise it is kind of the tech equivalent of an arranged marriage, with the youtubers acting as the matchmakers….ridiculous.

We're not getting a cut (in fact in real life, in the States at least, as I understand it, the pimps get all the money and give the girls the equivalent of pocket money, at least that is what I learnt from the Soft White Underbelly YT channel at least - terrible), unless you want to count getting a free code in most cases and sometimes codes to give away. Given the fact there's no money for most youtubers in ios music, the former is fair, even necessary, and the latter is beneficial to the devs too.

But yeah, 'I'm an app pimp' does have a certain ring to it, I guess 😅

yeh, but the relationship with apps is rather more like a drive-by one night hookup than a marriage around here. 😉

Matchmakers used to get paid too back in the old country ya' know.

If Apple's IAP system wasn't such a horrible mess I would maybe do it. As it is, it's more trouble than it's worth (a few lost sales don't make up for dealing with the IAP hell).

Especially since we're talking prices that are less than a Happy Meal (which you also don't get a demo for).

  • My mindset has always been that 'hobbies are allowed to have some expenses'.
As such I've never refunded an app or IAP.

I have refunded one 'Music CD' in the early days of iTunes Music Store when the original was 'corrupted' and repeated re-downloads didn't solve the issue.

I would consider refund for the more 'expensive' (>$19.99) apps but most of them have delivered as expected so there has been no real need to do that.

I'm also quite picky when it comes to choosing which apps to download, gone are the days of 'insta-buy' and 'support the cause/dev buys'.

If they don't add any added value for my use-cases I simply don't buy them.

The 'cheaper' apps have for me proven to be a more healthy choice than a bag of chips, chocolate and other 'snacks'.
Ie. instead of buying un-healthy snacks I get an app or apps for roughly the same amount.

I don't expect 'life-time support' for any app, if it happens it's just a nice 'bonus' :sunglasses:

    Cheers!

  • own nothing, be happy.
    sounds alike.

  • I would love for apps to have a demo or trial version. Loopy Pro is a good example. Also Sugar Bytes. They give you the whole app just without patch saving and AU compatibility. Perfect to really test everything and decide if you want to buy. Pianoteq is another good example. Hell even DRC and RRSs apps.

Red rock sound. They made polivoks and a lot of eqs, compressors etc. All their apps can be demoed as an auv3 but with a time limit before you need to reload the app

Red Rock Sound. They make a lot of high quality EQs and compressors. And their clone of the Polyvoks is excellent. All off their apps are free to download and even work as AUs, but it has a 5 minute time limit that has to be reset again again until you buy it. Not a bad idea.
