Will Logic Pro IOS help get updates for BM3?

edited May 2023 in Logic Pro

Intua Beatmaker Pro is a great DAW, but for some reason it gets very few updates or new features. It’s like a yearly event, even if that. It’s got a great concept going ,but it seriously needs new features and updates. I’m wondering if this launch of Logic IOS will put some competition and pressure on this company to help bring it more up to date. What do you think there’s any future or Is it a dead horse?

  • Probably the opposite.

  • It has been. 😉

  • Unless I was dreaming, the developer turned up here (near the end of last year, perhaps), with talk of a (large) update being in the works. Whether that has something to do with BM3 or a lnewer version didn’t seem clear. But perhaps it’s not worth writing off completely just yet.

    Maybe BM4?

I think you were dreaming or thinking of someone else. The developer doesn't even communicate on Beatmaker's own forum. Last visit August 2020, and to my knowledge has never commented here. The previous lead developer used to show up here, but he's no longer involved with BM3 since several years ago now.

I think beta testers did hint that an update was in the works around that time though. So it's possible there will be an update some day.

Ah, gotcha! I seem to have remembered it as the developer, as whoever it was spoke with authority and certainty about upcoming events. I did try to find the thread, but was looking for the developer. But at least you've confirmed that there was something being communicated about it all...so I wasn't dreaming ;)

    Phew!

I think the more I am trying out Logic, I won’t care much anymore about BM3. LP is not expensive, loaded with some dope synths and plugins , it will get constant support and probably it will be the most stable iOS DAW because it’s made by Apple for Apple. I don’t really like subscriptions, but at least I know Apple isn’t going to stop development or updates for it. I really don’t like it when I buy an app and the support just drops off.

  • BM3 is one of my favorite apps. The sampling/chopping capabilities are still unrivaled on IOS (and desktop) IMHO. I wish it were available as an AUv3! I've used it via IAA to create tracks in Garageband and Cubasis. That capability is no longer present in Logic Pro Ipad. What I did was launch BM3, then launch Logic Pro and create a drum track. Switched to BM3 and load up a bank of samples. Trigger and record them while the drum track is playing in Logic Pro. Finally I Exported the .wav file and dragged that into Logic Pro via the Files side-by-side method. It works, but the workflow is convoluted. An alternate method was to use Koala in Auv3 mode within Logic Pro. It works, but the chopping and sample triggering pales in comparison to BM3.

For the quick sketching I do on iPad ( destined for desktop as stems) BM3 is still perfect for me. I can dive into super long wav files (several minutes in length) and quickly pull bits together easily, changing speed and pitch, adding specific fx even on a single slice. Being able to quickly sequence synths, chop up and rearrange clips with automation recorded direct from AUV3 GUIs and then sample / edit them as audio. That is what BM3 is all about for me with some sideline perks. As a sampler/groovebox/sketcher it feels very complete.

If it were a sub I wager people would feel more entitled for earth shaking revisions but as is I find it a stable and powerful utility. I think most people who would want BM3 have it at this point and that market will not be growing much. Not being as niche I imagine a lot of Logic users will be pining for their specific wish list to be fulfilled and simply grow increasingly frustrated over time as there seems to be so much range of work that could be done on it but they can only realistically do so much. That scalable morphy GUI on a single screen is going to be it's biggest eternal hurdle I think. Like BM3 it does feel like a good sketcher to then bring to desktop to work on further and of course there will be much better back and forth with Logic but in the end it is a very different product to me than BM3.

To me BM3 is a super useful classic that I don't want changing too much and breaking due to external pressures; the vision was great and it seems fulfilled.
