Launchpad iPad app + Launchcontrol (Novation)
Hello! I have recently purchased a Novation Launchpad Mini MK3 midi controller for using with the Launchpad iPad app, and am also thinking of adding a 2nd controller for being able to control more easily both volume and filters on the Launchpad app while using the Launchpad Mini at the same time.
Does anyone know if I can use a Novation Launchcontrol (the older one, NOT the XL) together with the Launchpad mini MK3 (at the same time) in a way that theLaunchpad app uses the Mini MK3 for controlling the effects and launching the clips, and the Launchcontrol is recognized by the app and used for controlling the Volume + Filter from the app?
Please let me know. Thanks in advance 🙏

So I just tested this using an iPad Pro, Launchpad X, Launch Control and Audiohub to connect them all:
Might take a while for YT to process the HD quality
I don't see why not. I use the LaunchControl XL and the FULLSIZED LaunchPad together.
Thank you dear SpookyZoo 🙏🏽 I really appreciate you so kindly making the answer to my question as clear as water 🌻🙌
You are very welcome! 👍
My LaunchControl blinks all 8 pads lights when I connect it to the iPad via the Camera connector kit. It seems to be in some strange mode that is Not recognised by the Launchpad app. I have searched on the manual or internet but have not found a way to make it recognised by the Launchpad app. What may I be doing wrong?
I saw somewhere that I may have to switch it to low power mode but I have not found a way of doing so.
What may I be missing? Kindly let me know. Thanks for the hand 🙏🏽
A few questions:
What model iPad are you using?
How are you connecting the devices to iPad
Would you be able to post a video of the issue?
This thread has a mention of the low power mode for LC-XL, maybe there is a similar action for the normal LC
https://forum.1010music.com/forum/products/bluebox-compact-digital-mixer-recorder/support-bluebox/29043-midi-controller-issue-launch-control-xl
Where I spotted the following:
“Hold down both the User and Factory Template buttons and insert the USB cable. Release the Template buttons and press ‘Record Arm’.* Finally press the right arrow button. The Launch Control XL is now in low power mode. This setting is remembered even if the power is disconnected. To put the Launch Control XL back into full power mode repeat the above process but press ‘Solo’ instead of ‘Record Arm’."
Or maybe it's the vegas mode mentioned here?:
https://support.novationmusic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206862039-How-to-turn-off-Vegas-mode-with-LaunchControl
I don't see a low power mode within this manual:
https://fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/downloads/Launch Control GSG v2.pdf
You may need to flip the orientation of your cable where it connects to the LaunchControl if both orientations can plug in.
Launchpad cables, for instance are symmetrical but only work correctly in one orientation.
It also looks like my LC defaults to Factory Template #4 when connecting to Launchpad app, so you could try manually doing that. Hold down Factory button and press the pad #4.
Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
Thanks for the suggestions and questions. I’ll check them thoroughly and come back soon. In the meantime, here’s the video of the issue:
iPad model: iPad Pro (10,5’’) from 2017 running iOS 16.4.1
Thanks for the support 🙏
Hi @ricper I believe that is the vegas mode mentioned here:
https://support.novationmusic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206862039-How-to-turn-off-Vegas-mode-with-LaunchControl
Hold down both the up and down arrows the press the left or right arrow. Should turn that off.
this is actually pretty cool minimalistic live performance setup ! like it a LOT
I was able to turn off Vegas mode but the Launchpad controller has Not been recognized by Launchpad app yet. From what I recall Djay Pro also did Not recognize launch control as an available midi controller. I believe I went through all the factory modes and none of them made the controller recognized by Launchpad app.
I’ll explore some more tomorrow but so far have Not been able to make it work, even though I was able to turn off Vegas mode
🥸
I tried again and still have Not been able to have the launchcontrol recognized by Launchpad app or any other app on iPad (Djay Pro or Loopy Pro). I was able to turn off Vegas mode though. I also tried setting Factory mode template n. 4 as you had suggested to no avail. It’s just Not showing up as a recognized midi device on iPad.
What do you think might be causing this?
I’m away from my gear for a few days to test.
But how are you powering the connection? I see the Apple dongle has a charging cable connected.
Do you have a midi monitor app you can test to see what’s being sent by the LC?
Do you have a PC you can attach it to to test this also?
If so you may also try connecting it to the NOVATION Components site to see if it needs updating. I know it supports the XL.
Did you also try switching the cable orientation like @espiegel123 suggested?
I’ll be able to take another look after Wednesday. Good luck.
I’m beginning to believe it might have to do with the cable connection. I connected to the computer (Mac) and the firmware app did Not detect the controller even though it starts by blinking all the lights just the same.
This was a refurbished unit. I’m wondering whether the usb cable is the original one or a different one that somehow is Not doing the right job.
The cable seems to only connect in a single orientation, so I am wondering what the potential different orientation might be.
Here’s a video of me connecting it to the computer and the app Not detecting the controller:
Cheers
Ricardo
Yeah, that cable only has one orientation. (The LaunchPad X has a different cable that physically can connect in two orientations but only one works).
It could either be your cable being flaky or the USB chip in the Launchcontrol. I had a Launchkey that (while still in warranty) stopped connecting. They sent me a cable and I still had a problem. They gave me a new unit since it was still under warranty and confirmed later that the USB chip had gone bad. I've had the replacement for going on 5 years without a problem.
Problem solved 🙌 The cable seemed to be the main issue. I replaced it for a regular usb cable that fits, and it worked!
Thanks guys for the kind hands, it was sincerelly appreciated and I am now enjoying the new equipment with the Launchpad app 🥰
Good to hear! 👍
The issue started happening again after the iOS 16.5 update on my iPad.
After the iPad, the camera usb adapter stopped being able to use the lightening connector part to charge the iPad or any of the midi controllers. Basically most controllers stopped working after the update due to lightening charging stoping working. That is a known issue on the internet.
I then found out that if I used a usb-c to lightening port cable instead of a usb-a to lightening port, the above issue could be worked around. After I did that most controllers started working again but now the Novation LaunchControl has NOT worked again, even though I’ve tried different usb cables (which seemed to be the issue at first, as I had mentioned on a previous post). It seems to me to be related with the iOS update.
Are you or anyone else being able to use the Launchcontrol with the Launchpad app AFTER the iOS 16.5 update?
Oh yikes. Sorry to hear this.
I’m still on 15.6.1.
Hopefully they’ll work on a fix if it has been reported.
Hi. Good information so far. But I do not understand how to cable everything together. So, I have a iPadPro (with Launchpad) within a Alesis Dockstation, an old Novation Launchpad 1 and a Korg Microcontol which should control the iPads Launchpads controllers (like Volume, Shutters, etc.) .
How do I connect everything together - since I do not want to use a Macbook on stage... Or is is absolutely neccessary to use a computer? And if, what "connection" software would be to use?
Thx
I'm not sure you can use the Korg Microcontrol to control the Launchpad app volumes and filters etc.
The LaunchControl hardware automatically works with Launchpad app as they are both Novation products and have a native integration.
@ricper Did you manage to get this working again on iOS 16.5?
Looks like another forum member may be having MIDI issues related to the latest iOS.
