"Now It's Time" Logic Pro First Impressions and Quick Track Example

https://www.dropbox.com/s/is0r87qec27a2gw/Now It's Time Test(1).m4a?dl=0

I made this after skimming through the PDF version of the manual and watching Bolo Da Producer's video about Logic Pro. So this experiment is nothing special. It's just me using that one tune from Sash! to test the waters of Logic Pro.

Bolo's video showed several really cool things, including this crazy duplication mode where you select your MIDI clip and Audio and you can move them over, duplicating them instantly. (This also works with MIDI itself in the editor!) Once I got the hang of it, things flowed pretty intuitively.

The lead is a preset from Alchemy, and honestly I'm rather miffed Apple didn't include the full version of Alchemy in Logic Pro so that I could shape my own sounds. The watered-down version of Alchemy in Garageband makes sense, but not so in Logic Pro.

The bass is Buttersynth, which makes up for the lack of a proper phat synth in Logic Pro. Logic Pro crashed a couple of times when playing in Buttersynth, the second time leading me to rant for a few seconds (first world problems 😆 ), but I'm sure those errors will be ironed out with the next Logic Pro update.

The kick is from Sounds of KSHMR Vol 4, and the clap and hats are from Sounds of KSHMR Vol 3. It's pretty dumb that I have to use the Files app in slide-over mode just to get my samples into Logic Pro. 🙄 How short-sighted is Apple anyways?

Ah, but the effects in Logic Pro are where it's at! I got pretty much everything I need in Logic Pro, and honestly the only external effects I used were on the stereo output buss - RX950, MagicDeathEyeStereo, and Barricade. I didn't even need Youlean's Loudness Meter, because lo and behold...Logic Pro has its own fantastic LuFS meter that's easier to view! 😂

Also during this experiment, I discovered how to record my vocals while muting the input...just mute the input. 🤣 DUUURRR JIM! I didn't keep the vocal track and got rid of it. However, I recorded while using Bluetooth headphones, and Logic Pro automatically synced the vocals in time to make up for the latency! This is something Cubasis doesn't do. 😨 And I love Cubasis.

All in all, I gotta say that while I wish we had Flex Pitch and full Alchemy, and it sucks we don't (at least yet anyways?), Logic Pro does seem to be the best fully-featured DAW on iOS. A lot of things in it are pretty darn intuitive once you know what you're doing. Some things are still rather fiddly even though you know what you're doing.

I could have written the same thing and feeling than you about LP iOS. Even I tried the vocal … I didn’t use at this stage external AUv3 as I want first to test what is in the box like on LP desktop as I use it without any VST.

What's already in the box is fantastic I must say. :) I wish we did have the full Alchemy synth so I don't have to rely on external AUv3 synths and a proper sample browser. But, the drum samples in Garageband are pretty great, and they should be able to translate well into Logic Pro. :)

This will be my next mission is, before I get into some serious work with the Garageband projects I concocted for my "Praise Him!", to create a test Garageband project to import into Logic Pro. That will be my next test, and I'll simply upload it here in this thread instead of creating a new thread.

I have converted a project from GB IPad to LP IPad very straightforward no issues.

  • Don’t sleep on those early synths, though. Even if you reserve headlining sounds for newer stuff, the included plugins slammed through 'Phat' and/or judicial use of enveloper, comoressor, expander and exciter, should net you some great results.

It helps that emagic (Logic's original developers) were a talented bunch. Retro synth is much newer, but those older synths are solid!

    Indeed! :)

  • I think the piano roll and drum sequencer work well… which Is quite important really. Duplicating out sections seems to be nice and easy.
I was a tad disappointed trying an Alchemy patch and discovering I had no deep editing of it, I couldn't tweak its arp setting.
The drum designer is seaming cool and I found my way around automation quite quickly.

To be fair, its quite excellent but I was expecting better. I’ve never used Logic Pro before, I think its rated far higher than it deserves, particularly if you aren’t all that interested in their patches it comes with… I mean.. they sound great but If theres something simple I cant adjust, it gripes me.

People who are more into writing and composition with off the shelf sounds though… (nothing wrong with that) i think Logic Pros gonna make them very happy. On that note, its awesome.

I expect by the time I’ve made a few drum kits and templates I like with my fave AUV3s and drum samples, I’ll likely be fine with it.
Also to be fair, the synths it comes with seem pretty cool, more than enough if you haven’t got any.
Unautomated filter sweeps sometimes didnt seem smooth though, they sounded jumpy, clunky as if the UI wasnt feeding parameter changes smoothly.

It doesn’t seem to be a fun flexible environment like AUM or Loopy Pro is though. I get the impression I cant record/“resample” itself internally without using freeze/bouncing.

I’ve got mixed views… its gonna be great for some but for others still require the odd tedious workaround to acheive what Reaper or Ableton or Loopy Pro or AUM does easily.

Yeah, that was one of the disappointments for me, although not having Flex Pitch was a bigger disappointment (since I can use any synth AUv3 I'd like with Logic Pro).

The drum designer is seaming cool and I found my way around automation quite quickly.

Same here. Drum designer is super nice, but I had to purchase Sample Crate in order to audition samples proper before drag-and-dropping them over into Logic Pro. Not the end of the world, and at least I finally purchased Sample Crate.

I feel the same way. But then again, Logic Pro is still a mindblowing app, even with its shortcomings. Still the most fully featured DAW we got on iOS in my opinion.

People who are more into writing and composition with off the shelf sounds though… (nothing wrong with that) i think Logic Pros gonna make them very happy. On that note, its awesome.

And that's definitely me. I'm definitely a writer and composer. Then again, I love using Garageband as a musical sketchpad, and having Logic Pro to help me finish up my tracks is just wonderful.

I expect by the time I’ve made a few drum kits and templates I like with my fave AUV3s and drum samples, I’ll likely be fine with it.

Exactly. :) Any new app/software takes time to get used to.

Also to be fair, the synths it comes with seem pretty cool, more than enough if you haven’t got any.

Exactly. The synths are a bit dry sounding, but it's like meat. Sometimes you buy your meat preseasoned, and sometimes you just want meat you can season yourself. Most of Logic Pro's internal synths are like the meat you can season yourself to taste. ;) Add your own sauce as it were rather than synths with distinct character.

Unautomated filter sweeps sometimes didnt seem smooth though, they sounded jumpy, clunky as if the UI wasnt feeding parameter changes smoothly.

    Ah, now I see.

It doesn’t seem to be a fun flexible environment like AUM or Loopy Pro is though. I get the impression I cant record/“resample” itself internally without using freeze/bouncing.

Yeah, I don't think Logic is meant to be a fun flexible live performance environment like AUM and LP. It's more of a traditional DAW. For drone day coming up this Saturday, I still plan to use AUM to craft a live Ambient performance with Hilda and some random sample from freesound.org I'll stretch with PaulXStretch. But I will use Logic Pro to master the output instead of CB3. ;)

I’ve got mixed views… its gonna be great for some but for others still require the odd tedious workaround to acheive what Reaper or Ableton or Loopy Pro or AUM does easily.

Yep, Logic Pro is its own beast it seems. Just takes patience to tame the beast.

  • For me, prioritizing a full version of Sculpture in the first release instead of Alchemy seems like a good choice. And the fact that we did get full Sculpture makes me think full Alchemy is on their to-do list.

Glad youre liking it, i think its great for people.. Its sounds good and knowing you just pick a track and instrument… press Record and you are off… thats a great thing to have.
I expect occasionally I will be enjoying playing piano and strings (etc) on it, getting my Hans Zimmer on 😂
