Cubasis 3 vs. Logic performance test (multicore support confirmed)

edited May 2023 in Logic Pro

Ok, decided to do test to know if Logic really uses multicore CPU performance.

What i did on my iPad AIR M1:

  • opened new project
  • set buffer size to "512 samples" )
  • added track with Model D and short 1 bar loop with 16th notes on every second 16th note
  • hit play
  • now i duplicated that track, diplicated also clip
  • continuted until Logic stopped playbach with warning message about CPU overload (unfortunatelly there is no CPU meter in logic, at least i didn't find one, so this was only way how to figure i maxed out CPU load)
  • that was around 25 instance
  • then i started delete instances until i get to the point where playback was smooth and not even working with uni (fast resizing of mixer window, scrolling in mixer left-right quickly) didn't caused CPU overload waring

Ended and 19 instances as treshold where it constantly plays no mater what i am doing in UI. With higher count (between 19 and 25 instances) as soon as i started to move through UI, resize windows, switch windows - it alwats ended with CPU overload warning.

Then tried something like that in CUBASIS

  • ended at same number - around 19 instances is treshold where it keeps playing stead (buffer 10ms which is equiwalent to logic's "512 samples" setting). Cubasis CPU meter jumps around 80-90%.. you can add more and it still plays but stutters starts apparing. Here is Cubasis little bit better cause it still plays it just starts stutter - Logic just stops playback and encourages you to enable automatic freezing OR freeze some tracks manually.

Just as refence - other hosts with no multicore support (AUM, NS2) runs around 9 instances steady (on same buffer size like C3/LPX).

TLDR;
Logic Pro definitely utilises multicore CPU. CPU load of host itself is comparable to Cubasis (no significant deviation). Cubasis holds on a bit better when CPU is already on edge and stuttering appears - you can temporarily work in this are, which is not the case on Logic, cause it just stops on first significant stutter.

  • So does this convince you to take a closer look at it? Are you going to test and compare for the free month and then decide?

No definitely not going to pay subscription i'm very consistent with this. NS2 covers all my needs for music i make so i really don't need other DAW. But going to test it for free month just to explore all details, from pure curiosity. I like to know things :-))

There are definitely good things in Logic (lot's of features, dragndrop of clips into sampler is LOVELY, rearranging of plugins is smart, mixer is one part of whole app which is very well designed, small overview of plugins chain at bottom is very nice). Problem is, in overall it feels very unbalanced, to me it looks like this was premature release (probably pushed by some manager), lot of things looks just unfinished, like in beta or even alpha stage of developement (especially stock plugins ui - mostly complete disaster, with some anomalies which are actually pretty well designed like quick sampler)

I was a bit afraid it's will be hard fight with myself to not pay subscriptin (cause desktop Logic is my most favourite DAW ever) but no, it will be pretty easy cause how unfinished, unpolished and not well optimised whole UI looks.

  • Well, I've seen enough to convince me to get it once I get a new iPad Pro. And I continue to be very happy to discover new things with the desktop version of Logic Pro. It's nice to finally see both iPads and Macs become more complimentary at this level.

  • There’s a CPU meter. You have to enable it by pressing the 3 dots under the battery icon, next to the question mark and configure the control bar

oh cool.. i knew it will be somewhere but this was literally last place where i didn't look :-))) thanks

  • Would be great to see this performance test on an iPad Pro 12.9 M1 with 8GB ram if anyone has one.

Does the iPad Air M1 laugh at massive Drambo sessions, do you know? Trying to work out what to replace my iPad Pro 10.5 inch from 2017 with. The 2022 Pros seem good but very expensive.

that’s The last IPad “Pro” with headphone Jack

If I want a quick jam on YT that’s the IPad for me (without running to search into my drawers for multiple accessories )
Just hate hate hate hate hate the new iPads don’t have headphone jacks

Yep. I’m in the same boat. Going to upgrade my iPad today.

No idea sorry, not using Drambo .. But i think Drambo doesn't use multicore so that performance is proably not that big like Logic/Cubase ..

I just have permanently attached to my headpohones this one ant it works for me pretty well ;) in rare cases when i want to charge and use ipad at once i just live for a moment with airpods .. in most cases this doesn't happen .. That adapter is pretty hight quality (not like Apple white ones which are complete shit and break after few months max), i have it for long time now, using daily and still like new.

It's local brand of local store .. they are shipping just to few countries around my country so you probably can't order it .. but i am sure somebody makes same thing

it has realtek chipset for D/A converter - 16-bit/48kHz, which is completely ok for this use case

  • CPU performance is great in the projects I have tested so far, and to my surprise so is battery life - far less battery drain than when using Auria, Gadget, NS2, or Cubasis.

Oooo interesting. Since I recently bought an M1 Air 5 battery life on Cubasis really took a hit compared to my old Air 3.

highly in doubt about this, probably just placebo.. without proper metodic test i have problem to believe in this

    Something like

    • fully charge to 100%
    • create project in logic with some signifficat cpu load (preferrably something which goes to 80% cpu load)
    • keep it play with display turned on until battery dies, measure time
    • repeat same in cubasis with same plugins, same buffer setting, same display brightnes, same wifi/bluetoot stage (on or off)

until then - it's almost impossible, with same cpu load conditions, that different apps impact differently battery ...

I would have expected "Reaper" from you.

That's second one :-))) Logic is winner because of stock plugins

It wasn't a rigorous test, but I had a complex project (started in GB a couple of weeks ago) open for 45 minutes and only lost 3% of battery. An equivalent project in the other apps would use at least double that amount. Maybe just a faulty first impression, but it certainly surprised me.

I notice the same. After all which co.many apart Apple can dev apps that save battery life ? For sure they worked on battery life and CPU optimisation still you use only stock plugins.
    I
For all AUv3 in the coming weeks or months it will be part of the challenge for each dev , don’t know if Apple will help them ?

Ok one of possible explanations may be, expecially if you use relatively high display brightness, that logic because it has more black color (and in general darker color tones) then display may eat significantly less battery than for example in cubasis which has gright colors, lot of bright elements of UI.. this makes surprisingly big difference

other than that, dunno.. third party plugins drain same amount of battery no matter in which host they run , there is no way how host may cause thirt party plugon run more efficient ... and drain caused by host itself is relly just fraction of what plugins are causing ..

In theory - both Cubasis and Logic should drain more than any other app cause they use all cores of cpu...

I have something very similar that I got from Amazon, "JSAUX" is the brand. I'm very happy with it. Low cost, good signal including with 87 ohm headphones, and durable under daily use. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GFMW7ZJ
