Audio routing question

edited May 2023 in Logic Pro

I'm setting up a session using a couple of hardware synths with the External Instrument utility. I'm able to send MIDI, automation, and program changes to the hardware, but I can't find a way to route the audio back to an audio channel. I only see the option to send the audio to a bus.
I would like to sequence and add effects to the external channel, and then send everything to a regular audio channel so I can have the tracked audio in the timeline. Is it not possible, or am I missing something?
