Ableton link to midi - would this work?

If you have say Korg SyncKontrol into a synth/sequencer with clock sync - then out of that synth sequencer into another synth/sequencer (that does not have clock sync) via midi out - will the final Groovebox in the chain then be synced to Ableton Link (from the SyncKontrol) via midi (from the midi out of the middle/second one)?

    No.

  • When you say "that does not have clock sync", I assume you mean it has neither Ableton Link nor MIDI Clock sync. Those are two different things, so it matters whether that's what you mean or not.

  • I was meaning by not having clock sync as not having a dedicated input for clock sync.
As an example - SyncKontrol into a Berhinger TD3 (or maybe a Korg Volca with a midi out mod). The SyncKontrol dictates the tempo of the Berhinger\Volca…… now the midi out of the Berhinger/Volca is connected to let’s say a Roland TB3. Is the TB3 tempo now linked to the SyncKontrol at the start of the chain? 😃

Nevermind then. I misread the post and thought you were talking about software apps being driven by the SyncKontrol.

Ah OK - what’s your best guess? Do you think it would work? 😃

  • Better to get a real answer from someone with experience with the actual hardware.

😃 I’m looking forward to finding out.

  • Generally, A devices “midi out” only transmits midi being sent internally from that device (unless is has a “soft thru” option).
A devices “midi thru” port would re-transmit only what is sent to that devices in port.

That was the original Idea for the ports, but some devices do feature the soft thru that you can turn on.

To sync numerous devices from one clock source, I used to use a midi thru box.

    it depends on the synth/sequencer

You maybe missed it - I had an example a few posts above 👍

    Sorry ,I did missed the post , unfortunately I can't help , maybe a TD3/volca user will help :)

  • Actually I've been doing something like this the last couple of days with a Roland T8 with MIDI clock sync enabled on the T8's MIDI out from Ableton, then I've had Ableton & AUM or whatever using Link at the same time. The only real issue I had was Ableton's perplexing inability to record program changes which the T8 sends out every time a new pattern plays.

Did you have anything connected to the ‘clock sync’ inputs/outputs in the chain as opposed to the midi in/out ports?

not sure what you mean ... I had the T8's MIDI in and out and sync for out, and that was all. It could send and receive notes by electing its input or output on MIDI tracks in Ableton, and it would pass program changes, there just wasn't a way to record them that I could think of

You can sync something like the Korg SQ1 to Sync Kontrol which can then send MIDI clock to another device. You can sync a TD-3 to Sync Kontrol but it doesn’t output MIDI clock AFAIK.

Cheers for that - I’ll not be pursuing it any further 🤔….. I’m already planning another scheme.
