They are pretty rare, like less than one in twelve.
Ahh, ok. I live in the world of recording studios so I guess I see them more frequently than Windows PC’s.
Makes sense, I could see them being more common there. When I was at game studio offices there would be about four or five in a company of sixty people. Outside of work I would have to do a four hour round trip to even see one.
Hmm.. just popped into a coffee shop to test. Friend has usb-c iPad, works first time.. :-/. Think this is a hardware prob
In that Apple discussion I shared read all the reply’s, there’s some good stuff in there, one person suggests going to an Apple Store and doing it there on one of their Macs to ensure proper formatting if you don’t have access to a Mac. This is obviously if you don’t know anyone you can turn to. Also the library might have Mac devices to use.
I’m referring to this comment. The second response.
“search online for your nearest, “local” Apple store location and call contact phone numbers and call to make an appointment to ANY external drive you have properly format by Apple employees who have access to a Mac.
They will be glad to assist you.”
Huh. That’s always a possibility.
Does anyone have any idea about the internal function of components controlling the USB/pwr/data port on these devices?
What I'm finding is:
iPad is receiving charge ok when charging.. but strangely, (best guess), not putting out enough power to register a usb peripheral..
Obviously the battery is where it starts.... But I have no evidence to suggest the battery is playing up (for example draining too quickly / intermittent charging). Nothing like that is wrong, so I'm wondering if there's any capacitors or (god forbid) a data/power line / part of the bus which is causing a problem.
Do you reckon I could get schematics anywhere?
Many thanks.
Probably should have asked you about other peripherals. If your MIDI controller isn’t working then it is more than just a drive format issue. Sounds like it is inside the iPad. I wonder if there is any way of getting it tested without fully going through the repair process? It seems like it’s one of 2 things: the battery or the board it self. The battery is not that expensive to replace, but I don’t know what the costs would be if replacing the board. You need to befriend an Apple tech.
Sorry, I can offer any insight into components or what if anything can be done to fix it. All I can say is my iPad Air 2 was fine doing most things over USB until the battery started to degrade. Then I began to see increasing intermittence of iDAM connections and more difficulties with USB drives. I finally saw a post somewhere suggesting to use a powered hub and ... voila ... the problems disappeared.
So - not saying this is the case for you - but for me, the battery is somehow consuming too much bus power and/or not putting out enough reserve to do what it needs to do. This could be governed by components, or it could be part of the operating system's power management. I'm reasonably certain in my case that replacing the battery would fix it. I'm not planning to do unless I have another device in case something goes badly with the operation. It's not that hard to break out a hub for my purposes.
One last thought since I don't know if anyone has mentioned it. Have you tried a good cleaning of the USB port? I can't recommend the best way to do that, but I know that has fixed problems for my devices and my wife's more than once in the past.
My Apple CCK recently stopped communicating with drives. I get the ‘device requires too much power’ error even using a usb 2.0 drive with power to the CCK (iPad mini 5, Apple CCK 3.0, iPad OS 16.5). What’s strange though is my iPad still charges normally powered through the Apple cck.
This Gnaseet CCK has been working really well as a replacement and drives are recognized in the Files app like they used to be with the oem unit.

To add to what was m said, as the> @GrnEgz_N_Hm said:
The tolerances in these devices changes over time. CCKs eventually seem to die (Apple or otherwise but I find that the Apple one’s last longer)…my guess is that we tend to draw more power than they were intended to handle and supply enough power that the heat results in changes over time.
One thing that seems to have resumed CCK operation for some use is to use a stronger power supply than the 20W that shipped with some iPads...
Something to keep
In mind is that while using a higher-powered power-supply will often enable devices (Launchpad x and Launchpad pro being examples) to be powered by the cck that can’t be with the Apple power supply, it may shorten the cck’s lifespan. Powered USB hubs are useful as they will supply power to the peripherals without adding additional stresses to the cck.
Ok, that’s good to know I haven’t tried mine yet, since 16.5 update but I usually use a powered hub.
Dear all,
Thanks for the infos and feedback.
Yeah, it's gone from bad to worse now.
I noticed at first, iPad wasn't charging immediately when powered in. But would pickup say, 4-5secs after cabling in. (Iffy sign)
then a bit later, usb devices would work, but cut out intermittently.
Finally, today, the iPad will no longer even charge.. It's sat at 3% , running down from 100 the last time I charged it a week or 2 ago.
As you say, maybe it's the board, maybe it's the battery.
Google basic result show £80-100 for new batt. I'm fine with that.
But obvs it could be components, or the at worst, something major in the board.
I could do with some schematics really.
I've cleaned the port a few times with contact cleaner. No improvement.
I used to work with someone in IT who knew apple tech very well, to the point that he left our shitty company as he was clearly worth more!! But anyway!
Yeah I learned a few bits from him about managing apple devices in an educational environment. (MDM).
maybe I can hit him up...
Your device is pretty old. It could well be the battery on its last legs. I’d also be cautious about replacing the battery yourself. I know people that bricked their devices as there is little margin for error in iPads and iPhones.
Yeah I think unfortunately it has become very iffy now.
For example, it will charge ok at one point, but, disconnect the charger, then reconnect, and iPad may not then recognise it. Come back another time and it will pick up, etc..
it's very flaky.
Guy in phone/pad fix shop said about using an ammeter to read the amount of power the port is putting out. Although I have no idea what should be the correct reading on the ammeter. Maybe Google knows the answer.
General research indicates new batt + professional swap-out would be £110.
If it's a motherboard replacement you're looking about more like £300, at which point you're obviously looking at new iPad territory really..
Internal hardware failure was the reason! (IC chip responding for USB-c port data & power).
Crikey.
A whole 4 months later I return to my hell-thread!!!
So.. After a lot of drama, testing, and fixing, I have the iPad working again.
First thing was to test the health of the port. It seemed fine, but we replaced it all the same.
But the iPad still wasn't charging at all. My theory was that the IC on the motherboard (governing the usb port) was buggered. We replaced that with an IC from an old MacBook, put it back together and finally, it charges. It's charging at full like it's supposed to.
I'm relieved to first find out that my usb-c SSD is picked up when I plug in, and stays connected 👍🏻
next thing, music time..
For whatever reason, I cannot get my old VAVA usb-c hub to function with it at all. It's a 7-port and fairly well specced for the time (purchased 2020). 4k HDMI 30Hz output, SD, MicroSD, usbc-in (carries power too), and 3x USB 3 ports.
Essentially, for £35 it was brilliant. 🙌🏻
However iPad no longer recognises it at all so I've reverted to my old 'JoyGeek' 5-port usb-c hub instead.
I bought that one originally as a spare, and for portability, as it has a 3.5 headphone jack on it too.
But the design of it is pretty unstable (it's literally a rectangle hub, with a plug piece on it (the usb-c bit), it can very easily come loose and fall out the iPad when in use.
So I'm in the market again for a new one.
The old one I bought is no longer on the market (Amazon purchase).
But I have found an updated model on eBay (includes headphone port this time). Plus 60Hz on the HDMI which is a bonus.

however this has all cost me a fair bit in repair.
2 i've also seen this one on Amazon: it's by ANKER , 5-in-1, which is probably a more well-known brand

------does anyone have any opinions on these 2 or experience of them?
have you tried taking a toothpick and gently clearing the gunk out of the usb-c on your ipad?
The usb-c port got replaced in the fix so it's clean and fresh.
A bit disappointed with the fix my iPad received.
Before anyone asks, no it wasn’t taken to an official Apple fixit shop. I prefer not to spend excessively if I can.
When tested in the shop, it was proven to be charging ok, and also lit up/support my SSD no issues.
However after a few days it’s began zero supporting any usb accessories.
Charging is the port’s only ability now… 😕
Obviously this is no good for a musician.
I find it very odd behaviour to be honest.
Also strange, despite an entirely new usb-c ported being added in, any charging cable (C) that I’ve tested, only works one way round! (Go figure!). —this is usb-c…. You know, the ‘any which way it’ll connect’ standard.
At4 this point, since a MacBook USB IC was used in place of the original stock one in the iPad… I’m starting to google whether there are any notable differences in the spec of a MacBook IC ve an iPad IC for instance.
-not surprisingly there is v.little info out there about it.
Info obtained from a. Scottish fixit / iPad online website regurgitates some old discussion around the MFI standard, and what this meant for the actual physical makeup of an official Apple LIGHTNING cable vs a non-certified/nom-MFI cable. The differences internally are significant. (Chips vs lack of chips). It was very interesting to read..
This was written around the time that lightning cables were dominant, but it begs the question, does this concept also apply to any usb-c cables made by Apple? Further, what kind of problems are ppl going to face with the new USB-C-based iPhones?
Very interesting reading:

Dear all,
📝 Trying to backup my AUM sessions (and recordings).
📔 i've had a cursory look through the HELP? section (launched from within AUM app), and cannot find any useful info on how to backup/export 'SESSIONS'
SESSIONS:
I notice that long-pressing on a session will popup the iOS share sheet, allowing you to Save to Files.
---i have a lot of sessions to backup (iPad is dying). Is there a way to batch backup the entire lot in one go?
RECORDINGS:
The app suggests to 'Manage recordings in Audioshare'. Tapping this rightfully opens up Audioshare. -cool.
Same question, is there a way to export all recordings at once or must they be done individually?
Thanks guys, the recurring failure of this iPad is stressing me out very much!
You can use Files up to copy/archive it all. There is no need to do it from within the apps themselves.
All your AUM projects are in the AUM folder and all the recordings in the AudioShare file provider.
One thing I’ve noticed about this (unless it’s been fixed recently) is that if you drag an App Folder over to a hard drive it names the folder “Documents”. My work around is to zip the folder and name it appropriately. Is there a better option @espiegel123 ?
I doubt it. Those app-named folders in the Files app are actually named "Documents" in the app's file structure. The Files app displays the name of the containing app, but the real filename is always Documents.
I always select all within the folder and drag into the archive folder — as a result I avoid the issue.
Got it. Thanks @uncledave and @espiegel123
