JWM - The Geisha (Lofi HipHop) aka "Logic Pro - One Week Later" 🤪
If you like what you hear, why not like and follow me on SoundCloud and leave a comment in this thread below? NOW for my favourite part - production notes and rambling, yay!
This track was 100% produced and mastered in Logic Pro on my new iPad Mini 6 using my 3rd Gen Airpods. Most of the drums are from Image-Line's "The Lofi Box" sample pack, with the taikos being KAPro Epic Drums in Korg Module Pro, and the shuffle sound and reverse snare are from Image-Line's "Super Drums 8000". The Asian instruments and choir are all from Beathawk AUv3, and the strings are KAPro strings from Korg Module Pro.
I remember when I used to write off "The Lofi Box" and "Super Drums 8000" as "weak samples", because I didn't realise back in the 2000s that I had to add my own sauce to spice them up. I wanted those "phat and cool" Vengeance samples. It seems a lot of us were a bit dimwitted in our 20s, or at least I was at any rate.
15 or so years later, these Image-Line sample packs hold up so well for any genres you could think of! For these drums I processed them through Beef to add my own sauce. Listen to how punchy and perfect they sound! AH! Goodbye overprocessed "Sounds of KSHMR" packs off of my iPad 6. That's 10+gb of storage freed up! Add in some Dilla-styled off-grid timing on the drums, and voila! You got a beat!
So I discovered that indeed Beathawk AUv3 works splendidly in Logic Pro on iPad. That's a relief, because nothing else has those excellent Asian instruments like the Shamisen, Koto, and Erhu. And yeah, I used the Koto as my bass. It needed more low end, and I discovered that Logic Pro has a subbass plugin that, well, adds wicked subharmonics! So that's how the rumbling subbass was produced.
I went with the children's "Ih" choir in Beathawk to add a haunting, pining vibe to the piece, and of course some top strings from KAPro helps fill out the sonic spectrum nicely.
Mostly stock Logic plugins were used for the mixdown. Chromaverb is just saucey for those spaces. Not quite Crystalline, but good enough for a stock plugin dang! I used Vintage Opto compressor on the instruments buss. Single-band EQs (aka the stock filter plugin) for those curvy automated filter sweeps (Logic has automation curves!) to really add some pizzazz.
External plugins. As mentioned, I used Beef on the drums. Hardly anything can quite come close to Beef (except Knock) for adding sauce and spice to drums. On the master track I used RX950, Pitch Drift and Lo-Fi-AF, but the chain went Gain (to get the mix peaking around -12dB), RX950, Vintage Opto Compressor, Pitch Drift, Lo-Fi-AF for vinyl crackle (although I don't think I can hear any vinyl crackle since it seems Lo-Fi-AF sadly doesn't play nice with Logic Pro), the stock Adaptive Limiter and stock Loudness Meter to ensure I get the mix to -14LuFS to upload to SoundCloud.
My overall thoughts on Logic Pro - after spending a week learning the basics and some other such ish, I feel Logic Pro will be my new music creation home. For me Logic Pro feels like it has the ease of use of Nanostudio 2 (albeit Logic Pro has a fiddly slideover interface lol, but once you get over it and get used to it it's no big deal), a timeline like Cubasis 3, a pleasing (to me) GUI, fantastic stock mixing and mastering plugins, and awesome automation capabilities! When I duplicate a section, it asks if I want to copy automation data which is pretty handy to be honest.
And as I said, adjustable automation curves really sell the package for me! Most DAWs (including NS2) only have straight automation lines, and I really missed using automation curves since my "FL Studio on Windows" days.
Anyways, I feel I've only begun to scratch the surface with Logic Pro, but from what I've tried so far with a simple Lofi beat, holy smokes I'm going to stay subscribed! As I've said elsewhere, the Logic Studio subscription replaces the Auxy subscription. It's hard to believe they're the same price when Auxy Studio is basically a toy that hasn't been updated in a long time outside of basic maintenance and Logic Pro is this...this beast of a DAW app!
Here's hoping they add Flex Pitch and full Alchemy in a future update. 🍻

Oh right! The 16th-note mid bass was one of Logic's stock synths. Very dry synths on their own, but they sound good in a mix.
Also the native sidechain compression in Logic Pro is chef's kiss and super easy to set up, easier than in NS2 which is more like a 5-step process. 😂
Enjoyed the music and the rambling.
Don't stop either :-)
I've been looking for an Erhu outside of GB or Logic so will give Beathawk a look. It all sounded very nice in this track.
This is very nice indeed. Love the taiko’s and the chilled Asian beat. Great to hear your thoughts on Logic too. Waiting on the Sash! logic mix next 😉
Very good you win the challenge.
Thanks mate.
Thank you. To be honest the Erhu was processed with a couple stock plugins, but truth be told you need a good Erhu sound before you add effects, and Beathawk's sounds great on its own. The old adage "you can't polish a turd" definitely applies, and Beathawk is a gem.
LOL! 😆 We shall see where my muse takes me next mate. Thanks mate.
Heh! 😆 Actually...this gives me an idea for a thread...
I am not ready for months for the challenge doing a song in Logic IPad 😂
I enjoyed your impeccable beats and slick production, still grooving in my head. And thanks for the helpful info, too
Great production and very informative notes even though most of it went flying over my head 😊
Loved everything about this except for one thing!
The hi hat is way tooo loud!
If you turn this down slowly as a whole mix the hat will still be there when all else is gone
My apologies to you my friend, hehe. I don't know how the heck I missed your comment. I'm so glad you enjoyed it mate! And as always, I'm glad to help with any info anyone needs to know. I tend to overexplain things, which I hope is helpful.
Thanks for the bump and the kind words.
I just gave the track a relisten, and yeah, it does sound a bit loud. Then again, I tend to like my drums in the face, but I think I did overdo it with the hat and the shuffle on the right side.
