Blame It On The Vave… That’s Not A Portal, It’s A Mouth (live mix)

‘We’ve found it, Carter! The gateway to another universe!”
‘Wait, you fool! That’s not a portal. It’s a mouth!

But Carter’s warning came too late. And now he was alone in the ancient ruined temple. Alone with that hideous, hungry thing…

Something different for me, I think. Dangerously close to yer aktual choon, even…

Instead of starting with my usual autogenerators, I took my new M Vave Bluetooth mini keyboard for a spin in AUM, erm ‘playing live’ to create multiple Atom clips using Sunrizer for multiple pads plucks and textures, D1 and Mononoke on lead ‘guitar’ noises, Model 15 bass, and Hammerhead drums, Rozeta Scaler keeping me honest. I did drop in one instance of Tatat running DRC in as well, mind…

Then a live ‘performance’ mix, frantically scrolling up and down a humongous AUM channel list, muting and fading channels on the fly to create something a little more dynamic than I am used to. Quite nerve wracking, as I had to get the, er, ‘performance’ right first time as it was all being mixed down live to AudioShare. Quite different to my usual process.

As ever, very Interested to hear what people think…

*No DAWs were harmed during the making of this piece. Though a keyboard was tickled. Surprisingly.

  • Ha… frighteningly close to being melodic, rhythmic etc etc for you 😊
Very enjoyable, be interesting to see what you do with a full sized keyboard 👌

Ah, bless you for noticing! This one seemed to have slipped through the cracks otherwise! I launched it two weeks ago to a veritable storm of indifference… and released it a second time, when, in fairness, it did get picked up, a bit, alongside another track in a kind of bogoff deal (buy one, get one free :) ) My fault for posting it on a Sunday night,I think. Wrong time to catch eyeballs, obvs. Lesson learned…

Yes, I may be in danger of producing the odd tune if I’m not careful! :)

Quite seriously, it is a concern of mine: my happy space is the ‘beginner mind’, not knowing what I don’t know musically. I do however feel the limitations of that when it comes to development and progression in my pieces, and an urge to want to know more and have more skill in my fingers so that I can move beyond that.

But at the same time I worry that a little knowledge, in the unlikely event that I manage to acquire it, may prove to be a dangerous thing; that if I do acquire some base level of instrumental skill I’ll lose touch with the chaos, and end up as just the 500, 000th worst identikit EDM ‘producer’ you have ever heard… :( Shoot me if I ever try to write a song with a verse, a chorus and a bridge.

So: I’m going to try to treat the piano as an entirely separate discipline, set it up in a different room, not hooked up to the rest of my gear, not messing with its sounds, and trying to be disciplined about just being a good keyboard student, as a separate activity from creation, a discipline in its own domain.

If some awareness or skill from that practice should feed back into my beginner mind experiments on modular and iPad, great. But I will be trying for all practical purposes to keep them apart.

  • I try and listen to pieces in reverse date order so I’ll get to your BOGOF post at some stage. I like to think I do a valuable service, like the detectorists digging up ancient jewels for people to ooh and aah at.

I think there’s an argument that the untrained ‘amateur’ mind of a gifted individual can produce work (in any field) that is better, certainly more inventive than some trained professionals.

I know what you mean about the Sunday night post… I’m sure there’s a PhD thesis to be done on views vs listens against day / time of post, title, poster, coinciding world events etc 😊

  • Interesting. I think you’ve got the development/mutation side of things sorted. It’s not static in any way.
