Ambient pads or experimental drones like SoundScaper ?

Anyone recommend a drone maker or an app that makes experimental ambient pads or sequences ? I like Sounsdcaper, but everything sounds a bit the same from it, unless I am not using it correctly. Thanks

Depends whether you enjoy the workflow or not, though there are always the randomisation functions. You’d find some videos online.

For ambient sequences and drone sequences I really like both sqsl Temp (more for ambient) and sqsl Latch (more for drones) though they are both just standalone apps and neither has ableton link.

For just ambient pads there are so many options I wouldn’t know where to start! Depends I suppose also if you prefer your ambient light and fluffy or more on the dark side!

  • Noises, Fluss, DroneLab, Borderlands, SynthScaper, Tardigrain, Esoteric Synth, SpaceCraft, FRMS, Model 15 has a drone IAP which is fantastic….

  • Thanks you all😋

Spacefields after anything. Tomofon could work, haven’t delved into it that much.

PaulXStretch can turn anything into an ambient drone.

  • I like the pads and atmosphere in this track by Surgeon. He’s awesome.

  • Yeah, big up for the Model 15 Drone iAP!

I did a walkthrough on good apps for drone music recently too btw:

  • I’ll check them out. Love your videos BTW!

The Tresor label always delivers stellar quality artists. Good track.

    Yes, indeed.

  • Spacefields sounds pretty good.

  • Spacefields is great! I'd buy it over Glitchscaper any day, personally, not that they're even similar. But yes, it's easily my favourite Igor AUv3 release by a long margin

I just bought Spacefileds and I’m trying it as a synth, but nothing happens.. like no sound coming from it. I guess I’ll have to watch one of your videos :)

It’s an effect. Play just about anything through it, and instant soundscape.

If you like getting into the nitty gritty, MiRack is great for this kind of thing, and you can get lovely drones out of Hilda.

Velvet Machine can make lovely drones from all sorts of input, and Rymdigare (another processor/effect) can transform stuff too.

If you can deal with IAA rather than AUv3, Droneo is amazing.

Actually, correction re SpaceFields - I’d forgotten you can load samples into it. Check the manual for how to do it, it’s not obvious from the UI.

  • Is Spacefield kind similar to a shimmer or different?

Very different. It’s like having a looper with multiple delays with speed controls and a reverb on top.

    Interesting, thanks.

  • Thanks , I’ll have to get into it..

MiRack looks nice, is it like Drambo ? Is it AUV3? I wish in the App Store they would list the type of application or synth it is.

Kind of, in that they are both modular. But very different. MiRack is a fork of an early version of VCVrack, so it’s a virtual Eurorack setup. Hundreds of modules, and you wire them together using virtual cables.

Mind boggling, but huge fun. Though it can act as a gateway drug to hardware…

Dean from Electronisounds has a great beginners series on it, which might help you decide whether it’s for you:

FRMS has a bunch of great IAPs which are heavily discounted right now.

  • Also tons of nice instruments for decent sampler both inside the app (free and paid) and on the pianobook website (free). Venus theory has some lovely instruments good for drones, Volitions for example. You can find free and paid versions of that and his other ones in the decent sampler app or on the website.

  • Thanks everyone and I’m sure this thread will help others who are interested in this style.
