But this isn’t even related to DriverKit, certainly not 3rd party drivers - it’s a new Class Compliant capability.

With iPadOS 16, Apple introduced the DriverKit API, which, for the first time, lets accessory manufacturers create specific drivers to make their products compatible with the iPad.

this is interesting, means if any soundcard doesn't work with ipas we don't need to blame apple appnymore, but just actuall soundcard manufacturer for not impoementing drivers for iOS :))

    good to know

Late to the party, but, the expand between iPadOS 16 and iPadOS 17 is 2.5GB - hopefully Apple has a lot of support for hardware in this 2.5GB…

Overall is iPadOS 17 beta 1 fast and stable, no hassle with music apps, just great overall…

  • Sounds like another soon to fail
I took my MacBook and updates offline when 10.7.8 was announced
Looks like I’ll be taking my iPad offline very soon to keep it running at its optimized version and all apps working
I was kidding when I said just one more app and I’m done and then I saw beat scholar but really I only have space for one maybe two apps and that’s a good sign to get offline before updates ruin the stuff that works

If I need to go online I’ll use my laptop or my iPhone

You may reconsider this as apps start to leverage the ability to use more than one audio interface at a time. That's a huge advantage for some people, though not important for all.

It'll probably not end up being that much more of an increase in the end. Beta software isn't usually well optimized at first and can also contain extra debug code, redundant libraries that haven't been pulled out yet, etc.

  • It sounds like this allows multiple audio inputs now, maybe that includes multiple audio interfaces

Curious, but which advantages are you talking about?

As an example, two 4-channel sound interface or one 8-channel sound interface, the difference?

This may be true game changer we are waiting for years .. Means opened doors for hi-end audio HW manufacturers... for example imagine Elektron Overbridge for iOS !!! Or UAD .. etc ..

Third party drivers is really HUGE step forward for iOS.

You obviously have a larger budget than I do. Perhaps you don't care as much about mobility either.

But, for instance, being able to use something like an iRig HD pro, a keyboard usb audio out, a headset with a microphone, an OP-1, and a USB mic without having to worry about which one was plugged in last. Or, maybe, we can use iDAM at the same time we have an interface plugged into an iPad. Perhaps loopback through another interface.

Like I said, it may not be useful for everyone. But just look at how many times questions get asked here and the answer has been "Sorry, you can't do that because iOS only allows one audio interface at a time and only the last one plugged in is active."

    Ok, get your point!

Let’s see if the final version of iPadOS 17 may allow multiple sound interfaces - after all, Logic Pro may have Apple to change their mind, hopefully…

But, it may be really high spec iPad to enable this features, M1 and up…

It sounds as if iOS 17 will indeed add that ability but host apps will have to build that support in. I don't think it'll come automatically.

Logic Pro did already change Apple's minds. In fact, they secretly produced an API for it and kept it to themselves as they developed Logic Pro to go into competition with iOS DAW developers. Now that Logic is out there using an OS capability that is impossible for anyone else but them to use, they pretty much have to make it available to others. Dick move. But at least the playing field should be put back to something like level soon.
